Barretaine sits high on the edge of the Jura’s first plateau. When choosing a destination, you can focus on different things: the view from Croix du Dan, the history surrounding Église Saint-Savin, or the cultivation and processing of plants at Sensations Simples. These themes help you assess the character of the place through specific landscape, cultural, and culinary connections before looking for a hotel in Barretaine.

Panoramas and hiking

From the Croix du Dan viewpoint, the view stretches across the Dole plain to the Burgundy hills beyond Beaune and Dijon. How far you can see depends on the weather. Barretaine’s elevated position on the edge of the Jura’s first plateau provides the landscape setting; Croix du Dan offers specific views. This helps distinguish the village’s general elevation from the panorama specifically associated with the viewpoint.

Stage 7 of the Échappée Jurassienne also climbs uphill to Croix du Dan. From there, you can enjoy a view of Poligny and the Culée de Vaux. The hiking stage adds a specific ascent to the landscape: it links the climb to the viewpoint with the panorama of Poligny and the Culée de Vaux. Check trail conditions before setting out. The village’s location and the stage’s ascent answer two different questions: where Barretaine is in the Jura, and what hiking connection the trail to Croix du Dan offers.

The church and historical periods

The present-day Église Saint-Savin de Barretaine has a bell dated 1782. An earlier Église Saint-Savin was demolished in 1769 and rebuilt elsewhere in the village. The two dates mark different points in the church’s history: 1769 refers to the demolition and rebuilding of the earlier church, while 1782 is the date of the bell at the present-day church. A retable painting in Église Saint-Savin also depicts the former Saint-Savin chapel. This image introduces the chapel as a distinct historical reference point; it should not be confused with the earlier church.

According to tradition, Barretaine’s origins are said to date back to the 9th century. Thus, clearly dated events and objects associated with the church stand alongside a more distant origin tradition, expressed with appropriate caution. These different time references give the village’s history several layers: an early tradition, the rebuilding of the earlier church, and the bell dated 1782.

Plant cultivation and processing

Sensations Simples processes plants into syrups, Délices, seasonings, ice cream, and sorbets. The business organically grows around ten plant species in the Jura, on an area of 3,000 m² at an altitude of 600 m. Cultivation and processing offer two different ways to explore the subject of plants: the cultivation figures give the area, altitude, and approximate number of species, while the product range shows the forms in which the plants are further processed. Product availability may vary. If you are interested in the products while there, check availability in advance.
