Ranchot: Cycling and Culture
Accommodation in Ranchot
Ranchot is best explored through two specific themes: cycling and rotating exhibitions. The Voie des Salines offers a 38-kilometre cycle route connecting two UNESCO saltworks; there is also a shorter section to Port-Lesney, rated easy. You can enjoy culture at the Chapelle de Ranchot, while a designated fishing section on the Doubs offers another option. You can plan your time around a particular cycling route, an exhibition date or a fishing trip.
Cycling the Voie des Salines
The Voie des Salines is a 38-kilometre cycle route that joins EuroVelo 6 at Ranchot and connects the UNESCO saltworks of Arc-et-Senans and Salins-les-Bains. It alternates between dedicated cycle paths and roads shared with other traffic. Check the route information before setting off, as conditions can vary locally.
A different, shorter option is Stage 2 of the Tour du Jura Vélo Loisirs, from Ranchot to Port-Lesney: it is 25.5 kilometres long and rated easy. You can compare the two cycling options by distance; the Voie des Salines also alternates between different types of route. There is a car park beside EuroVelo 6 for the Ranchot–Port-Lesney stage.
Forest landscape and heritage
Near Ranchot, the Voie des Salines passes through the Forêt de Chaux. Covering 22,000 hectares, it is France’s second-largest deciduous forest. Along with its connection to the UNESCO saltworks, the forest crossing gives the route a distinct link to both heritage and nature.
Exhibitions at the Chapelle de Ranchot
The Chapelle de Ranchot is an exhibition venue in the heart of the village and is open to all artists. The exhibitions change regularly. Around 15 exhibitions are held there each season, and the summer season lasts three months on average. Admission to the exhibitions is free. If a particular exhibition is a key part of your trip, check the current programme in advance, as the schedule may change.
Fishing on the Doubs
A 3,940-metre section of the Doubs between Rans and Ranchot is designated for pike and zander fishing. It stretches from the Rans weir to the Moulin des Malades weir. These precise boundaries help you distinguish the fishing area from the cycling routes and exhibition programme as a separate activity. Fishing access and regulations vary by season; check the conditions that apply to your planned visit in advance.
A distinctive type of accommodation
If you are considering a different type of accommodation as well as hotels, the Cabanes du Bois Clair in the forests of Ranchot offer stays in real treehouses. Details of the offer may change, so check the latest information before booking.
