Pupillin lies on the Route des Vins du Jura and is known as the “World Capital of Ploussard (or Poulsard).” Ploussard is a red grape variety typical of the Jura wine region. Winegrowing shapes the character of the village; you’ll also find trails through vineyards and woodland, viewpoints and historic sites. This makes Pupillin a destination where you can explore nature and the history of winegrowing together.

Winegrowing and a visit to the Fruitière

The Fruitière Vinicole de Pupillin is a cooperative and wine producer, as well as a wine-tasting cellar and specialist wine shop. Visitor offerings include cellar tours, guided tours of the facilities and wine tastings. The tasting room is open year-round on weekdays and weekends. Confirm current visitor arrangements and opening hours before your visit.

The cooperative’s history is also tied to specific figures: its bylaws were adopted on February 13, 1909, with 33 members and 23 hectares of vineyard. The date, membership and vineyard area provide an early measure of the Fruitière. Alongside today’s visitor offerings, the cooperative and winegrowing are also part of the local history.

Circular trails between vineyards and woodland

The “Pupillin, capitale du Ploussard” circular trail is 6 kilometers long and leads through the vineyards of Pupillin. The L'arboretum de Pupillin circular trail is also 6 kilometers long. It runs through the forest of Pupillin and includes an arboretum with 26 species that grow in the municipality. Despite their equal distance, the two circular trails offer different landscapes: one leads through vineyards, while the other combines woodland and an arboretum.

The Balade Ă  Pupillin is an easy hiking trail, 5.9 kilometers long, with a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. It runs along a vineyard slope with successive terraces of hard limestone and marl slopes. For a similar distance, you can weigh up different options: the vineyards on the named circular trail, woodland and biodiversity at the arboretum, or an easy hike with a specific duration and described hillside terrain.

Viewpoints and historic sites

The Belvédère at the southern entrance to Pupillin offers panoramic views over the vineyards of Pupillin and the Jura plain. The Belvédère de Pupillin has a picnic area, an observation kiosk and an orientation panel. These three facilities complement the view with places to pause, observe and find your bearings.

The Petit temple antique ou fanum at Le Bioulet in Pupillin is a Gallo-Roman site from the Roman imperial period. It was listed as a historic monument by decree dated November 2, 1987. The Oratoire Saint-Léger is also located on the Chemin des vignes; the demarcation line once ran at the foot of the oratory. Both sites connect visible structures with their respective historical significance.

One of the fountains in Pupillin is the Fontaine des Tourterelles. Its roof is made of limestone slabs, and it has a basin. Together with the sites on the Chemin des vignes and the Fanum, it offers another perspective on the village’s architectural and historical heritage.
