Dampierre-sur-Salon combines a distinctive riverside location with historic buildings and a variety of ways to explore the surrounding area actively. Most of the town lies on an island formed by the two arms of the Salon. When planning your stay, you can therefore focus on different things: local history, a cycling tour, or a section of the Via Francigena.

Church and historic townscapes

The present-day church of Dampierre-sur-Salon was built between 1762 and 1783 to a design by the architect Becque. It replaced an older church dedicated to Saint Peter. Inside are four historic bells, several sacred artworks, and a number of old tombstones. Here, you can encounter various examples of church history and sacred art in one place.

The town hall and washhouse also bring together different functions in a single building. Louis Moreau designed it in 1828. The complex includes a long basin in the centre, side washing galleries, and a council chamber above. The combination of washhouse and council chamber makes the building a distinctive destination for anyone interested in historic architecture and spaces used in everyday life in the past.

Manor houses and the Maison Couyba

The manor house at 31 rue Carnot is listed as a historic monument. It was built around 1785 for Claude-François Rochet, an ironmaster. In the second half of the 19th century, it was known as Château Beauvalet. These dates place the building within several stages of its history, from its construction to the name it later acquired.

The Maison Couyba is the former family home of Charles Couyba, a French politician and poet who was also known by the pseudonym Maurice Boukay. The manor house, built in 1789, is currently being restored; this status may change, so check before visiting. In the cellar of the Maison Couyba, the Musée des sciences de la terre Pierre Cretin presents a permanent exhibition of fossils and minerals. The house thus combines a local biographical story with an insight into the history of the Earth and natural science.

When choosing a route, you can use the specific route and its length as a guide.

The digital adventure trail Explor Games® – Une balade avec Charles leads through the historic, cultural, and natural heritage of Dampierre-sur-Salon. It complements the individual buildings and routes with an experience that brings together several facets of the town.
