In Mareuil-Sur-Ay, architectural history, Champagne, and outdoor activities offer different ways to experience the destination. The Église Saint-Hilaire includes construction phases spanning several centuries; the Château de Mareuil-sur-Ay was built in the 18th century. There are also experiences at Le Clos Corbier, an annual event in August, and routes of varying lengths. These themes can help you decide whether culture, Champagne, or outdoor activities should shape your stay before you look for hotels.

Church and château: different periods of construction

The Église Saint-Hilaire was built in phases dating from the late 11th century, the 12th century, and the 16th century. The tower and spire were classified as historic monuments by decree dated March 2, 1933. The distinction is important: the construction phases relate to the church, while the later protected status applies specifically to the tower and spire. Thus, the same building reflects a history of construction spread across several centuries, alongside a precisely dated classification of specific parts.

The Château de Mareuil-sur-Ay was built between 1771 and 1774 to plans by the architect Chevotet and completed by Chaussard. On November 5, 2003, part of the complex was listed as a historic monument. The protected features include the park with its underground structures and icehouse, the outbuildings, the entrance pavilions, two walled kitchen gardens, and the orangery. The two buildings can therefore be distinguished by their chronology as cultural landmarks: the church is notable for its several widely spaced construction phases, while the château was built over a period of just a few years.

Champagne, vineyard scenery, and an August event

Le Clos Corbier in Mareuil-Sur-Ay offers three Champagne experiences: cellar tours, tasting workshops, and a traditional Champagne lunch. Availability and booking conditions may change, so check them before your visit.

At Clos des Goisses, the vineyards are reflected in the Marne, forming the shape of a Champagne bottle. Philipponnat is also associated with the historic vineyards of Mareuil-Sur-Ay.

Walking and cycling routes

The “Balade les Bulles de Mareuil” walk is 1.2 kilometers long and takes about an hour. The approximate duration complements the distance by giving you an idea of how much time to allow in your day. The 28-kilometer “Le Parc au fil de l’eau” discovery trail is associated with Mareuil-Sur-Ay. The 90-kilometer Véloroute de la Vallée de la Marne is also associated with the town. A cycling route connects the three municipalities of Aÿ-Champagne. The lengths of 1.2, 28, and 90 kilometers represent routes on different scales. Conditions on the walking route may change; check them before setting out.
