Sandillon: Loire Views, Culture and Trails
Accommodation in Sandillon
Sandillon brings together Loire landscapes, architectural history, craftsmanship, and a range of activities. If you are looking for a hotel here, you can choose your destination based on what you would like to experience during your stay: river views, historic buildings, insights into pottery, or a route towards the Sologne. The highlights differ not only in subject but also in their specific form—from a viewpoint to a self-guided tour.
The Loire and the landscape
The Loire forms the northern boundary of the Sandillon area in a wide meander. From the Levée in Sandillon, you can see the river and Île aux Oiseaux. This brings together a broad sense of the area and a specifically named viewpoint: the meander describes the northern edge of the municipality, while the view from the Levée focuses on the Loire and the island. Sandillon is also part of the Natura 2000 network. This adds another nature-related aspect to the landscape. If you would like to explore the river landscape, you can therefore choose between looking out over the course of the Loire and visiting the viewpoint with its two named features.
Architectural history and cultural heritage
The Domaine de La Porte was built from 1776 onwards; its chapel was completed in 1785. The Domaine is partly listed as a historic monument and partly classified as a historic monument. Its architectural history thus gives the site a clear historical timeframe, while the two heritage designations apply to different parts of the Domaine.
Another cultural stop is the Church of Saint-Aignan de Sandillon. It contains a chapel dedicated to Joan of Arc. The park at the privately owned Château de la Porte is open to visitors. As access conditions may change, check the current arrangements before your visit. This allows you to include a visit to the park in your plans without implying that the privately owned Château itself is open to visitors.
Pottery craftsmanship at the workshop
At Poterie Mirette, you can visit the workshop and learn about the process from clay to everyday objects, as well as the potters’ craftsmanship. The workshop near the Loire makes handmade stoneware items. Here, the material, the making process, and the finished object are all connected: the visit offers more than just an introduction to a subject; it gives you a look at the journey from raw material to finished object. This provides a cultural experience distinct from architectural history and church architecture. Booking conditions may change; check them before visiting the workshop.
Routes and activities
“Boucle 05 – Crochet Solognot” starts at the car park on Rue de la Villette in Sandillon. From Sandillon’s agricultural surroundings, the route leads into the Sologne. Its starting point and change of scenery give the route a specific character: it begins at a named location and connects the area around Sandillon with the Sologne.
“L’histoire perdue de Sandillon,” by contrast, is a self-guided walking tour. Visitors follow clues using the Baludik app. Topics covered on the historical tour include the Maquis de Samatha, a resistance group. This activity combines walking with a historical trail, while “Boucle 05 – Crochet Solognot” focuses on the route from Sandillon’s agricultural surroundings into the Sologne. App availability may change; check before setting out on the tour.
If you would rather plan a single activity than a route, fishing takes place at the Étang de la Tuilerie in Sandillon. Local access conditions may change; check them before visiting.
