Saint-Maurice-sur-Fessard: hiking trails and heritage
Saint-Maurice-sur-Fessard offers several points of interest for a stay: marked hiking trails, the architecture of the Église Saint-Maurice, the history of the Écluse 25 de Machot, and routes that provide access to the town. If you are looking for a hotel, you can choose your location based on whether you mainly want to hike, explore architectural history, or plan your trip along one of the routes described. The church and lock are heritage sites, while the hiking trails let you choose based on distance.
Hikes with a shared starting point
Saint-Maurice-sur-Fessard has three marked hiking trails ranging from 9.5 to 11.5 kilometers. They all start from the parking lot of the salle polyvalente. The shortest and longest routes differ by two kilometers. If you want to fit a hike into your daily plans, this range gives you a concrete comparison; the shared starting point means that all three routes begin in the same place. This lets you choose the routes mainly by the distance you want to cover, without having to factor different starting points into your decision.
Église Saint-Maurice: construction phases and access
The Église Saint-Maurice was fully listed as a historic monument by decree on April 29, 2010. Its Romanesque nave, late Gothic choir dating from the late 15th century, and bell tower porch built around 1547 point to different construction phases. These terms distinguish the building’s parts and give each its own time reference. There is also a specific access note to bear in mind during your visit: part of the church has been closed to the public since the 1930s. Take this restriction into account when planning; its listing as a historic monument does not mean that the entire building is accessible.
Écluse 25 de Machot: lock keeper’s house and engineering
At the Écluse 25 de Machot, the lock keeper’s house was rebuilt between around 1850 and 1860. The technical history of the site also includes the lock chamber: it was filled via aqueducts, whose stone air vents are still in place. In addition to the history of the house, the lock offers a second specific point of interest: the chamber’s former filling method. The surviving vents connect this technical detail to a feature that can still be seen today. Visitors interested in heritage can distinguish the construction history of the lock keeper’s house from the technology of the lock chamber.
Routes to the town
You can reach Saint-Maurice-sur-Fessard by bicycle via the Véloroute, which runs alongside the Canal d’Orléans. A voie douce also leads into the town, following the former Montargis–Orléans railway line. The two connections can be distinguished by their different reference routes: the Véloroute runs along the canal, while the voie douce follows the former railway track. If you are planning your trip based on route features, both the Canal d’Orléans and the former railway line serve as landmarks.
Fishing on the Bézonde
The Bézonde is a natural fishing spot for clubs, individuals, and families, as well as for sporting competitions. Before visiting, check local fishing conditions and permits.
