Bonny-sur-Loire offers a variety of reasons to visit: the Église Saint-Aignan reflects a long history of construction, Les Îles de Bonny offers a diverse Loire floodplain landscape, and the town lies on the Loire à Vélo cycle route.

Landscape and cycling

Les Îles de Bonny is a protected natural area between the Loire and the Cheuille, located in the Loire’s floodplain. Its landscape includes extensive natural meadows and a variety of habitats typical of the Loire region, ranging from sandy banks to alluvial woodland. A 4.5 km trail offers the opportunity to explore the natural area. Check the trail conditions locally before planning your visit.

Bonny-sur-Loire also has a clear connection to cycle touring: it lies on the recognized Loire à Vélo cycle route. The cycle route and the 4.5 km trail on Les Îles offer different ways to experience the surrounding area. This distinction can help you think of cycling and exploring the natural area as separate focuses for your trip.

History and architecture

The Église Saint-Aignan is classified as a historic monument and brings together styles from the Romanesque period through to the Renaissance. Its oldest parts date from the 12th century: these include the choir, the right aisle and the bell tower. The south transept portal, built in the Renaissance style and dated 1543, adds a later touch. The building’s features therefore trace a span of time from the 12th century to the Renaissance.

The town’s history also has its own timeline: during the Hundred Years’ War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453, Bonny-sur-Loire was a fortified stronghold. Together with the church’s architectural history, this offers a view of two different aspects of the town’s past: the development of an important building and Bonny’s historical role during a lengthy conflict.
