Beaulieu-sur-Loire brings together church art and evidence of canal construction with opportunities to observe nature along the Loire. There are also gardens, a historic half-timbered façade and activities with very different time commitments. When planning your trip, you can therefore first decide whether you are most interested in architectural history, nature or a practical hands-on activity.

Church Art, Half-Timbering and Canal History

Different architectural styles come together in the Église Saint-Étienne: the nave is Romanesque, the choir Gothic, and there is also a transept. The Baroque altarpiece is noteworthy as well, as it is rare in the region. At its center is a painting of the Pentecost. The church thus offers a look at both its architectural features and a specific subject in sacred art. Check access before your visit.

The Ancienne maison des Chanoines dates from the 14th century. On its half-timbered façade, a dovecote sits above the beams. Inside, the house preserves a historic spiral staircase that connects all floors. Check in advance whether the interior is accessible. The Grange pyramidale des Brosses dates back further: it comes from the 15th and 16th centuries and is considered a typical rural building of northern Berry. It is privately owned and can be seen from the outside along the short walking trails. The two buildings can therefore be distinguished by their visible features and different construction dates, without assuming that the interiors can be visited.

The canal heritage can also be explored in concrete terms. The Écluse de l'Étang lies where the old and new Canal latéral à la Loire meet. The listed Écluse de Mantelot can be reached via the old canal. The Écluse de l'Étang is also home to the only bridge of its kind on the Canal latéral à la Loire. Engineers Sigault and Mazoyer designed the bridge in 1891. The lock, canal junction and bridge each offer a different starting point for exploring water engineering.

Loire Nature and Trails

The Grèves et îles de Maimbray, along the banks of the Loire, offer opportunities for birdwatching. Birds mentioned there include terns, bee-eaters, herons, night herons and plovers, as well as other heron species. The presence of birds varies by season, so timing matters if you have particular sightings in mind. The Étang des Brosses is another place for observing nature. It has an observation shelter where you can watch wildlife without disturbing it.

The Jardins de l'Alisier Blanc combine flower, vegetable and fruit gardens with a Zen garden. They attract native wildlife, especially insects. The garden therefore offers a different focus from the observation sites along the Loire or at the Étang: here, designed garden areas are paired with their importance for native wildlife. If you would rather combine different landscape and nature themes on one route, the 18-kilometre “Circuit entre val de Loire et canal” offers opportunities to observe wildlife and historical sites. It passes through woodland and other landscapes. Check trail conditions before setting out.

The Loire à Vélo is also relevant for cycling trips. In Loiret, it includes a section between Briare and Beaulieu-sur-Loire that combines protected nature and cultural heritage. The cycling section and the 18-kilometre circular route are two distinct points to consider in your planning: for the Loire à Vélo, the specified section between the two towns is key; for the circular route, consider its stated length and how it connects landscapes, wildlife observation and historical sites.

Activities and Local Products

Rozenn Bigot’s pottery studio in Beaulieu-sur-Loire, near the Maimbray lock, has an exhibition space. Visits are available by appointment; courses require a reservation. Beginner courses last two hours, while advanced courses run from one to five days. You can therefore choose between a shorter introduction and a multi-day course. Ask in advance about exact dates and availability.

“Légende de Nettir” is a family adventure featuring puzzles and small games that lets you explore Beaulieu-sur-Loire through its history. It combines local history with an active exploration of the town. The Jardins de l'Alisier Blanc also host floral design workshops led by Jacqueline Jouret under the name “Composez votre bouquet fleuri.” Dates and booking arrangements may change, so check in advance.

Domaine Guérot offers tastings and sells white, rosé and red wines bearing the Coteaux du Giennois controlled designation of origin. If you would like to include a tasting in your plans, ask about the options in advance. The Maison du terroir et d'animations has a broader focus: it supports local producers and their activities, sells local products, and showcases the region’s gastronomic, cultural and natural heritage. The products on offer and the programme may change. The range of local experiences therefore extends from a specific wine tasting to a center that brings together different aspects of regional heritage.
