Rigny-Ussé brings together the history of Château d’Ussé, historic churches and different ways to spend your time. The château stands on the banks of the Indre, less than 500 metres from the Loire. There are also two walking trails with clearly stated distances and durations, cycle routes linked to Notre-Dame de Rigny, and a fishing course at the Bardeaux de l’Indre site. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose how to balance cultural history, exercise and fishing.

The building history of Château d’Ussé

Château d’Ussé evolved from a medieval fortress through Renaissance architecture into an elegant pleasure château of the 17th and 18th centuries. Construction of the present château began after Jean V de Bueil’s initial work, with the prison tower and a first chapel. The early start of construction and the château’s later form belong to different phases of the same development: the tower and chapel mark the beginning of the present building, while the pleasure château describes its later form.

Notre-Dame de Rigny and earlier church buildings

The former parish church of Notre-Dame de Rigny offers a different perspective on the past. It has been classified as a monument historique since 1930 and was built over two earlier churches: one dating from the 7th or 8th century, and another from the late 10th century. The classification dating from 1930 thus belongs to a different period from the predecessor buildings. When exploring the history of the area, you can consider the status of the former parish church separately from the much earlier succession of churches.

Walking trails: consider distance and time together

The Sentier nature de Rigny-Ussé is an easy 1.5 km walking trail that takes between 30 minutes and an hour. It is suitable for pushchairs, people with reduced mobility, families and bicycles. The Sentier d’interprétation is also an easy walk; it is 1 km long, takes about 45 minutes and connects Château d’Ussé, the town centre and La Blardière.

When planning your time, it is best to compare distance and duration together: the roughly 45 minutes for the shorter trail falls within the time range given for the 1.5 km trail. Distance alone therefore does not give a clear indication of how long the walk will take. Trail details and conditions may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Cycling and fishing

Notre-Dame de Rigny is on the “LOIRE à VÉLO” and “INDRE à VÉLO” cycle routes. There is also a fishing course at the Bardeaux de l’Indre site, designated as family-friendly and accessible to people with disabilities. It can be reached from the car park at the church in Rigny-Ussé. Alongside the château’s history and walking trails, you will therefore find a cycle-route connection with a named point of reference and a fishing course with designated accessibility.
