When looking for hotels in Saint-Patrice, you can choose your destination based on several specific interests: church history, archaeological finds, wine offerings and signposted routes. Its history spans from a necropolis with finds dating to antiquity to Romanesque architectural features. Tastings, a road cycling route and a hiking stage add practical activities to these experiences.

Church and architectural history

The church of Saint-Patrice, which is still used for services today, was built in 1849 and consecrated on April 9, 1850. Its high-quality stained-glass windows were recently restored; most bear the signatures of glassmakers Lobin or Fournier. The church is also known for its excellent acoustics.

The Romanesque church has a large, single-aisled nave without vaulting, typical of regional architecture in the 11th century. At the beginning of the 12th century, a square choir with thicker walls was added. A bell-tower porch was built at the entrance in the 13th century, and was formerly covered by rib vaults. The nave, choir and porch each reveal distinct architectural features and building phases.

The history of the first church is linked to a priory community founded around 1032. Archambault had given the church and land to the Abbey of Noyers so that people could settle there. The name “la voie romaine” (“the Roman road”) also recalls the area’s earlier history: the road crosses the hamlet of Les Forges, and its name refers to the ancient road between Tours and Angers.

Archaeology and historic sites

The necropolis of Saint-Patrice includes inhumation and cremation burials; the finds date from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. A square walled enclosure was also uncovered at the necropolis. These archaeological findings add a much earlier historical layer to the medieval architectural history.

The cemetery of Saint-Patrice is home to the funerary chapel of the de Castellane family. Another historic landmark is the Château de Rochecotte: the Duchess of Dino owned the château and spent some of her best years there, away from the bustle of Paris.
