Le Louroux offers several different points of interest to consider when planning a trip: nature around the Étang du Louroux, walks, the priory, village history and regional products. When planning your stay, you can arrange these themes according to your own interests. For routes, specific distances and the stated trail features can help you compare your options.

Ponds and wetlands at the Étang du Louroux

The Étang du Louroux area consists of two ponds: the 55 ha Étang des Roseaux and the adjacent 5 ha Étang de Beaulieu. At 55 ha, the Étang des Roseaux is eleven times the size of its smaller neighbour. The two bodies of water therefore differ considerably in size, but belong to the same pond area.

The wetlands at the Étang du Louroux include woodland to the northwest and meadows to the south. They also encompass a diverse mosaic of natural habitats that supports numerous species and breeding birds. This gives nature enthusiasts several specific points of interest: the ponds, the different landscape features and the diverse habitats.

An ornithological observatory at the Étang du Louroux allows you to observe and identify the birds found there. You can focus not only on watching the birds, but also on identifying them. The approximately 1.35 km interpretation trail at the Étang includes an observatory accessible to people with hearing, intellectual, mobility and visual disabilities. Check the facilities locally before your trip.

Compare walking trails by distance

The “Les étangs du Prieuré” route is 15.8 km long and offers a 5.1 km variant. It is rated easy, starts and ends at the Étang du Louroux, and is marked in yellow. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out.

The 5.2 km “Label Balade” route forms a loop around the Étang du Louroux. “Les ailes du Louroux” is 18.6 km long. The stated distances therefore range from the shorter variant to a considerably longer walking route. The 5.1 km variant and the 5.2 km loop are similar in length, but differ in form: one is part of the “Les étangs du Prieuré” route, while the other forms a loop around the Étang. This lets you compare the options by their specific distances and routes without treating the different trails as the same.

The priory, village history and regional products

The priory of Le Louroux, also called Château du Louroux, was founded by Marmoutier Abbey in the 11th century. The complex includes the prior’s residence, two barns and a dovecote. The Church of Saint-Sulpice, dedicated to Saint Sulpicius, is also part of the complex.

Le Louroux’s interpretation programme comprises 14 panels introducing visitors to the priory, the village and the Étang du Louroux. Its themes therefore range from the priory to the village and the pond. The Maison de Pays tells the story of Le Louroux and its region. Visitors can also discover a wide variety of regional products there. During your stay, you can therefore choose from different interests in addition to the landscape and walking trails: local history, the priory and the variety of regional products.
