Discover Rouvres: church, mills and the Vesgre Valley
Accommodation in Rouvres
Rouvres lies in the Vesgre Valley. Its cultural heritage ranges from religious architectural history and former mills to washhouses and a chapel. Viewpoints offer views of the village, its slopes and the surrounding countryside; the GR22 long-distance trail also passes through Rouvres. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, these highlights can help guide your choice of destination: Rouvres combines local history with a specific hiking route and the landscape of the Vesgre Valley.
Church and architectural history
The Église Saint-Martin was classified as a Monument historique by decree dated 16 October 1992. Its choir bay and bell tower date from the Romanesque period; the north aisle was built in 1820. This makes it possible to distinguish different construction phases in a single building. The dates refer to different things: 1820 marks the construction of the aisle, while 1992 is the date of the decree classifying it as a Monument historique. The Romanesque dating applies to the choir bay and bell tower; the aisle has its own date.
Mills and surviving watermill features
At the eastern entrance to the village stands the Moulin de Rouvres, also known as the Moulin Pithrou. It was a former manorial grain mill; its waterwheel and millrace system have been preserved. The Moulin de la Folie, also known as the Moulin Garnier, is located at the western entrance to the village and was formerly a fulling mill. A waterwheel, millrace, sluices and grilles have been preserved there. The two mills therefore share a waterwheel and a millrace, while the Folie also has sluices and grilles. Their former functions also differed: one was a manorial grain mill, the other a fulling mill. The comparison thus has two specific aspects: former use and the surviving parts of each mill system.
Chapel and washhouses
The Chapelle Sainte-Geneviève de Rouvres is a small rural building associated with the hamlet of Les Mordants. It is dedicated to Sainte Geneviève de Paris and has long been associated with local devotional practices. Its dedication and devotional tradition give the chapel two distinct cultural and historical connections: a religious connection and a longstanding local tradition. The Lavoir de la Cornette is an old washhouse by the river. The Lavoir de la Fontaine is also an old washhouse, but it was built at the site of a spring. The clear point of comparison is the water setting: the river at the Cornette, and a spring site at the Fontaine.
The Vesgre Valley and hiking route
The viewpoints offer views of the village, its slopes and the surrounding countryside. They complement the history of individual buildings with a perspective on the landscape setting of Rouvres. The GR22 passes through the village and offers a different travel connection from the fixed attractions: it is a long-distance hiking trail that runs through Rouvres. When planning your trip, you can consider these interests separately: the viewpoints focus on the landscape and surroundings, while the GR22 offers a connection to the hiking route.
