Discover Frazé: Architectural History and Activities
Accommodation in Frazé
Frazé combines several historic architectural landmarks with a range of activities for visitors. The château, manor house, church and tower reflect the town’s architectural history; fishing is possible at the municipal Étang de la Cayenne, and Fraz'explore offers a year-round discovery trail. The different schedules are especially useful when planning your trip: the trail is available all year, while fishing has a season and the trout day takes place in April. This lets you treat architectural history, water-based activities and scheduled events as distinct focuses for your stay.
Historic buildings in Frazé
The Château de Frazé, with its outbuildings and park, was classified as a historic monument by decree on 24 November 1948. The ensemble is located near the Foussarde River. Its construction also tells a story about the area: part of the château was built using bricks and roof tiles fired locally. Its protected status, location and history of materials provide three different points of reference for understanding the building.
The Manoir du Châtelier is also part of this historic context. It was an outlying defensive structure of the Château de Frazé. After being destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War, it was rebuilt around 1500. This sequence links its earlier defensive role with a later reconstruction, adding another chapter with a dateable history to the château’s architectural story.
The Church of Notre-Dame de Frazé has Romanesque origins and was expanded in the 16th century with four gabled chapels. Its Renaissance portal is classified as a historic monument. Above the west door is also a Flamboyant Gothic rose window dating from the late 15th century. The information about the rose window and the chapels points to different building periods; to understand the church, it is worth distinguishing these phases rather than assigning every feature to a single period of expansion.
The Saint-François Tower offers another specific architectural detail: it still has a foundation of Grison stone and rows of white stone. Together with the Château’s locally fired bricks, this offers a vivid comparison of different materials in Frazé’s architectural history, while keeping the details of each building distinct.
Fishing at the Étang de la Cayenne
Fishing is possible at the municipal Étang de la Cayenne; fishing permits are sold on site. The fishing season runs from late March to mid-September. Every year in April, the Gaule Frazéenne organizes a trout day there. The April event therefore falls within the stated fishing season. If you want to plan your trip specifically around the trout day, check the exact date in advance.
When planning, the seasonal limit on fishing is the main difference from the discovery trail, which is available year-round. The season dates help you choose the right time for this activity; the annual trout day also provides a specific date within the year. Fishing permits are available on site at the Étang.
Fraz'explore all year round
“Fraz'explore – Les secrets de Frazé” is a free discovery trail open to the public, inviting visitors to explore Frazé and its history. Unlike fishing, it is not limited to the period from late March to mid-September, but is available all year round. The discovery kit for the trail is distributed at La Passerelle during opening hours; bear this condition in mind when planning if you want to use the kit.
