La Grande-Verrière: Trails, Forest and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in La Grande-Verrière
There are several ways to plan a stay in La Grande-Verrière: a moderate hike, a mountain biking stage, historic traces and a seasonal programme at Château de Vautheau. The options differ in route, activity and visiting arrangements.
Landscape and historic traces
La Grande-Verrière is surrounded by the Glenne state forest and the Méchet Valley. The Méchet is a trout stream, and the Circuit du Château runs alongside it. These are two distinct landscape features of the area, alongside a specifically named walking route.
The area’s history can also be traced at several sites. La Grande-Verrière lay on the historic road between Bibracte and Augustodunum (Autun). Fragments of a Roman mosaic were found in the hamlet of Buisson. The road and the find provide different points of reference: one links the area to the historic connection between two cities, while the other relates to an archaeological find in a particular hamlet. Also found here are the remains of Château fort des Roches de Glenne, which belonged to one of the Morvan’s most important châtellenies.
Hiking and cycling
The Circuit du Château is a 10.6 km moderate hiking trail. It starts and ends at Place de la Mairie in La Grande-Verrière, so the start and finish are at the same place. Along the way, the route passes the access road to Château de Savilly. Access to the private estate may be restricted. The hike therefore combines a clear starting and ending point with a route that follows the Méchet.
The Circuit du Grand Vernay runs for 1.7 km towards Château Boutton. This is a different route reference from the Circuit du Château, which starts and ends at Place de la Mairie. Cyclists can also take the Anost–La Grande-Verrière stage of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central à VTT. Its final section descends pleasantly into La Grande-Verrière and offers lovely open views to the west. Unlike the Circuit du Château loop, this is the final part of a mountain biking stage. The options can therefore be distinguished by activity and route type, rather than treated as equivalent outings.
Visits and seasonal programme
Individual visits to Château de Vautheau are available by reservation on the first Saturday of each month from May to August. Every summer, the château also hosts concerts, drawing classes, walks, Heritage Days and private visits. The individual visits and the recurring summer programme provide different reasons to visit. Check the current schedule before travelling; reservations are required for individual visits.
If a visit to Château de Vautheau determines when you travel, take the seasonal calendar and reservation requirements into account when planning your hotel stay. For walking and cycling trips, the different route types provide further practical points of reference for planning your stay in La Grande-Verrière around your activities.
