For a culturally focused trip, Grury offers two different historic buildings: Château de Montperroux, with its medieval fortifications and Renaissance features, and Faulin, a fortified building in ruins. Carp fishing at Fantasticarp (Étang de Montperroux), a carp pond in the Saône-et-Loire département, is another option. The historic buildings and fishing appeal to different interests and can therefore be included separately in your travel plans.

Château de Montperroux: Fortifications and Renaissance Architecture

Château de Montperroux is located in Grury, in the Saône-et-Loire département. It was probably built in the late 12th century and remodelled in the 16th century. A medieval polygonal fortified complex with towers, it combines an early construction history with clearly identifiable features. “Polygonal” describes a shape with multiple sides; the towers are another defining feature of the fortifications. Its construction and later remodelling belong to different periods in the building’s history.

The main residential wing was built around 1580. The surviving Renaissance interiors include French ceilings, a staircase with opposing flights, and monumental, richly decorated fireplaces. This interior includes a range of features: the ceilings, the layout of the staircase flights, and elaborately designed fireplaces. In the staircase description, “opposing flights” refers to the direction of its sections. This distinguishes the detail from the other interior features without reducing the interiors to a simple list.

On 17 July 2014, the entire Château was listed as a historic monument. The listing also includes the southwest corner pavilion and the building’s grounds as an archaeological reserve. Its scope therefore covers not only the main residential wing but also these additional parts. Both the architecture and the defined scope of protection are part of the site’s history.

Faulin as a fortified building in ruins

In Grury, Faulin is a fortified building in ruins. It offers a different kind of historic building alongside the Château: Faulin is characterised as a ruin, while the Château is associated with surviving Renaissance interiors and specific features. Comparing the two helps distinguish their different architectural emphases. At Faulin, the focus is on the combination of fortifications and ruined condition; at the Château, construction phases and interiors provide a way into its architectural history. When comparing historic buildings, you can thus distinguish between their physical condition and their surviving features.

Carp fishing at Fantasticarp

Fantasticarp (Étang de Montperroux) is a carp pond in the Saône-et-Loire département, where carp fishing is possible in wooded, natural surroundings. The banks are maintained and deliberately left in a natural state. This combines a specific fishing opportunity with banks that are explicitly kept natural. This is a different focus from the architectural history of the two historic buildings: here, fishing and the waterside surroundings are the main theme.

A member of the Fantasticarp association welcomes visitors on site and helps them get set up. Cars can be parked near some, but not all, fishing spots; toilets are available. The limited parking should be taken into account when choosing a fishing spot. Support and facilities may change. Therefore, check the details that matter for your plans before your visit, especially if you depend on a particular parking space or on assistance on site.

This gives you a clear distinction when choosing: in Grury, Château de Montperroux and Faulin represent different aspects of architectural history; Fantasticarp combines carp fishing with wooded, natural surroundings in Saône-et-Loire. Whichever of these themes is most important to you can shape your stay, without combining the historic buildings and the fishing pond into a single destination.
