Chalon-Sur-Saône offers several distinct areas of interest to consider when planning a stay: museums, the district around the Cathédrale Saint-Vincent, and the Saône, with riverside walks, parks and gardens. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether collections, architecture, the history of photography or waterside activities will shape your stay. Each of these areas of interest offers a different way to experience the city’s culture and townscape.

Museums: Archaeology and the History of Photography

The Musée Vivant Denon holds more than 25,000 archaeological objects, as well as 11,000 sculptures, graphic works and ethnographic objects. Its collections cover 100,000 years of history; these figures may change over time. The archaeological collection is also substantially enriched by underwater research in the Saône, which is unique in Europe to date. Archaeological objects are presented alongside sculptures, graphic works and ethnographic items.

The Musée Nicéphore Niépce is housed in the former Hôtel des Messageries Royales, a building dating from the late 18th century on the Saône waterfront. The museum explains the development of photography, from its invention by Nicéphore Niépce in 1827 to the digital image. Its collections include various devices, heliographic plates and personal belongings of Nicéphore Niépce. This gives the museum a different focus from the Musée Vivant Denon: here, the subject leads from the history of photography to the related collection objects.

The Cathedral and the City’s History

The Cathédrale Saint-Vincent was built from 1090 onwards in the Romanesque style. Its present-day appearance features a Gothic elevation and a Neo-Gothic façade. In addition to the cathedral, the complex includes the former bishop’s palace, the cloister and the canons’ houses. The Cloître des Chanoines is the only surviving canonical cloister in Bourgogne and Franche-Comté. The cathedral district can therefore be explored through more than just the church: its other buildings and the distinctive cloister are also part of it.

The Espace Patrimoine presents a permanent exhibition on the urban development of Chalon, beginning with the ancient Roman city of Cabilonnum. This approach offers a different emphasis from the museums’ collections: the city’s development is at the center. The Espace Patrimoine offers general and themed guided tours, including visits to places that are partly closed to the public.
