Givry: Wine Landscapes, Routes and Heritage
Accommodation in Givry
Givry lies in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise, surrounded by vine-covered slopes. The destination includes named walking and cycling routes, outdoor activities in the municipal forest, and historic buildings from different periods. For planning your trip, wine, outdoor activities and architecture can be considered as separate highlights.
Wine and Appellation
The Givry AOC mainly includes red wines made from Pinot Noir and white wines made from Chardonnay. At the tourist office in Givry, a selection of more than 30 wines from the appellation is sold at producer prices. By appointment, Domaine Desvignes offers a guided tour of its vineyards and wine cellar. The two offerings differ in format: the tourist office offers a selection for sale, while Domaine Desvignes offers a tour of the vineyards and cellar.
Outdoor Activities
In Givry’s municipal forest, Acrogivry offers 31 high ropes courses with more than 350 aerial activities. The site also has a 12-hole mini-golf course beneath century-old oak trees. The choice of activity is clear: on one hand, there are high ropes courses and aerial activities; on the other, mini-golf holes in the shade of the old oaks.
Churches and Historic Buildings
The Church of Saint-Martin de Cortiambles has a 12th-century bell tower and two side chapels dating from the 15th century. In Givry, the Church of Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul was built from 1772 to 1791 in the neoclassical style; it is a work by Emiland Gauthey and is listed as a Monument historique. Its style is inspired by classical models.
The Halle Ronde is also listed as a Monument historique. Lazare Narjoux built it in 1825; it formerly served as a grain market. The dates span the 12th to the 19th century and reveal different phases of construction. The two listed monuments also have different historical details: for the church, its construction period, style and attribution to Gauthey are important; for the hall, its construction year and former use as a grain market.
Walking and Cycling
The “Givry: Découverte nature de la Côte Chalonnaise” route starts in Givry, is 9.9 kilometres long and is rated moderate. The Givry G1 walking trail leads to the Impluvium washhouse in Cortiambles. The routes differ in their focus: the first specifies its starting point, distance and difficulty level, while the G1 has a specific destination.
The cycling loop through Givry takes the Voie Verte on the return journey, a former railway line converted into a cycle path. When choosing a route, you can weigh up different features: the walking route is defined by its distance and difficulty level, while the cycling loop takes you back along the former railway line.
