Chasselas: Hiking Routes and Heritage
Accommodation in Chasselas
Chasselas brings together several distinct themes for planning your trip: marked circular trails of 7.5 and 15 kilometres, a heritage walk through the lanes and historic buildings. There is also the Domaine du Château de Chasselas, which can be visited by appointment. If you are looking for a hotel in Chasselas, you can choose your destination based on the planned mix of activity, architecture and a scheduled visit.
Circular trails of different lengths
Two marked circular trails start and end at the Esplanade in Chasselas. Le Mont Archez is 7.5 kilometres long; Les crĂŞtes du Beaujolais is 15 kilometres long. Both routes are circular trails for hikers and mountain bikers. The Mont Archez route passes through wooded areas near Mont Archez and offers views of the village and valley. So, in addition to its distance, the shorter loop also offers a specific landscape perspective.
On the longer loop, the route follows the GR 76A markings from Prémessin to the Grange du Bois. It then continues to Mont Archez and on to the Fontaine aux Vernes. When choosing between the two loops, you can compare their lengths directly: the 15-kilometre loop is exactly twice as long as the 7.5-kilometre loop. Both are marked for hikers and mountain bikers; trail conditions may change, so check them before your outing.
Heritage in the lanes and on the heights
Since 1 December 2014, Chasselas has held the official status of Site patrimonial remarquable, established as part of an AVAP. The Romanesque church of Notre-Dame, also known as Chapelle aux loups, stands on the heights above the village. The corners of the bell tower of Église Notre-Dame are adorned with sculpted heads.
The “Chasselas, entre artistes et légendes” walk leads through the village lanes, passing works of art, Mâconnais gallery houses and other heritage features. The village’s landscape setting is also part of its profile: Chasselas is included in the Grand Site de France Solutré-Pouilly-Vergisson. The village stream, the Arlois, was used primarily to power the mills in the surrounding area; there were probably two mills in Chasselas. This use of the stream for milling is part of the village’s history.
The Domaine du Château de Chasselas
The Domaine is a 12-hectare wine estate surrounding a château dating from the 14th to the 18th century and flanked by three towers. Tours for groups and individuals are available by prior appointment. Arrange your visit before you arrive. This allows you to plan it as a separate activity alongside the circular trails and the village’s heritage.
