Discover Chauffailles
Accommodation in Chauffailles
Chauffailles lies in the green Botoret Valley, at the foothills of the Monts du Haut Beaujolais. The town is considered a health resort and has walking paths, as well as architectural history, textile traditions and leisure activities. If you are looking for a hotel in Chauffailles, it helps to decide in advance which aspects of your stay matter most: are you more interested in the château and church architecture, the history of weaving, or paths and activities in the park? The town’s distinctive features offer concrete pointers.
Château and church: architectural history and details
The Château de Chauffailles is located on the outskirts of Chauffailles, by the Botoret. The medieval château was rebuilt in the 18th century; its larger northeastern tower appears to date from the 15th century. This brings together different phases of architectural history: the château’s medieval character, its rebuilding and the cautiously dated origins of the tower.
Église St André is a basilica church with a wide central nave, separated from the side aisles by seven round-arched arcades. The choir stalls and choir panelling have also been preserved. The layout of the church interior and the preserved choir furnishings thus offer two distinct aspects of the church.
Textile history at the Musée du Tissage
The Musée du Tissage is housed in the former Guéneau boarding house. Young women who worked at the Chauffailles textile factory lived there. The building’s former residential use links textile history with the lives and working conditions of the factory workers. The museum displays working looms, from handlooms to mechanical looms. Its subject matter therefore encompasses both hand weaving and mechanical weaving technology; at the same time, the former boarding house tells of the connection between living and working in the town.
Park, walks and discovery trails
The Parc du château – aire de loisirs invites visitors to stroll around the pond; picnic tables and deckchairs add to the amenities. There is also a large zip line, a football pitch, athletics tracks, a skatepark, a pump track and a multi-sports court. The same park thus combines places to walk and relax with various sports and exercise facilities.
The tourist office offers the family puzzle trail “Au secours de l'ermite” in Chauffailles, available year-round. Check availability before your trip. “La légende du fil magique” is a treasure hunt and discovery trail in Chauffailles. Availability and conditions for this activity may change, so check the latest information in advance when planning your visit.
La Nature du Bois displays turned wooden objects and offers workshop tours year-round by appointment. If you plan to visit, arrange your visit in advance. The workshop tour, which must be booked, therefore needs different planning from a walk in the park or a discovery trail.
Seasonal food and drink
The fully renovated park in Chauffailles hosts four food-themed evenings each year in summer. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the event programme and dates in advance. These seasonal events therefore add a time-specific occasion to the year-round discovery trails and the themes of architectural history and weaving.
