Pougues-Les-Eaux – Thermal History and Park Art
Accommodation in Pougues-Les-Eaux
Pougues-Les-Eaux combines its former thermal history with art in the park, opportunities for walks, and nature themes. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish these main features: Parc Saint Léger represents both the thermal station’s past and outdoor recreation. Bellevue adds flowers, activities, and the surrounding landscape to the picture. Historic buildings and former shops, in turn, tell of the time when water from the springs was part of spa life.
Thermal History and Art in Parc Saint Léger
Parc Saint Léger was once the center of the thermal station of Pougues-les-Eaux, which was active from 1568 to 1971. The park’s history and the development of the spa town are therefore closely connected. At the same time, the park is a place for walks and recreation, with shady, flower-filled paths. This makes it possible to think of a visit in terms of both historical significance and the character of the park paths, without equating the two aspects.
A contemporary work of art by Xavier Veilhan floats on the pond. Le Splendid, a permanent work of art in the form of a playground, is also located in the eastern part of the thermal park. The two works offer different ways of experiencing public art: in Veilhan’s work, the pond and floating form are part of the scene, while Le Splendid takes the form of a playground. Visitors interested in art will therefore find more than one form of artistic expression here.
The Springs Pavilion and Former Drinking Hall
The Pavillon des Sources Saint-Léon et Saint-Léger was built between 1905 and 1907. It stands on the site of an earlier drinking hall, which was built around 1900. There, spa guests were offered water from the Saint-Léger and Saint-Léon springs. To place these structures in context, it is helpful to distinguish between the two phases: 1905 to 1907 refers to the pavilion’s construction period, while the drinking hall, as an earlier structure, dates to around 1900. Both are part of the town’s thermal history, but they are not the same building.
Flowers, Activities, and Views in Bellevue
Bellevue offers opportunities for walking, relaxing, and playing, as well as health training and well-being. An educational trail highlights the area’s different flower species, and Bellevue offers views across the surrounding landscape. Different interests are represented here: the trail draws attention to flowers, while the views offer another perspective on the landscape. The activities on offer also go beyond a walk. Visitors choosing a destination based on nature themes can consider these features as practical points to keep in mind for their stay.
Walks and Other Views of the Town
The Circuit de la Goutte d'Eau is a walk with six stages that takes visitors to well-known places in Pougues-les-Eaux. The stages give the route a clear structure and focus attention on places within the commune. This differs from the educational trail in Bellevue, which highlights different flower species: here, the focus is on walking to well-known places.
Smaller landscape features also shape the views of the town. At the lake in Pougues-les-Eaux, a small bridge leads to an island. The Allée des Soupirs, lined with poplar trees, offers another named landmark in the landscape. The historic Promenoir adds a reminder of its former use: small shops once stood there, including a confectionery shop. It sold sweets and barley sugar made with water from Pougues-les-Eaux. These shops belong to the past; together with the drinking hall, they point to the former importance of water in spa life.
