Accommodation in Tence
Tence brings together historic buildings, trails through its lanes and destinations along the Lignon. If you’re looking for a hotel in Tence, you can plan your stay around the things that interest you most: local history and historic monuments, or circular walks and natural landscapes. Notable cultural sites include the Croix-menhir de Mendigoules, the Chapelle des Pénitents, the Château du Besset and the former hospice pharmacy. Trails lead, among other places, through the lanes of the town and to the Lignon.
Historic Monuments and Local History
The Croix-menhir de Mendigoules in Tence is a menhir and an archaeological site. It has been protected as a historic monument since 5 January 1989. The Chapelle des Pénitents is also protected, including its interior; it was built in 1813.
The historical details of the Château du Besset should be distinguished carefully: the lordship of Besset is mentioned in texts dating from the mid-13th century. The château’s façades and roofs have been protected as a historic monument since 30 September 1991. The pharmacy of the Hôpital Saint-Joseph is also protected as a historic monument, including its wooden interior fittings. These fittings appear to date from the first half of the 19th century.
The Musée de la Pharmacie and the Chapelle des Pénitents
The former hospice pharmacy in Tence is now the Musée de la Pharmacie. A visit explains the site’s history and how various pharmacy devices work. The museum displays two historical models: one based on documents from 1521 and another based on digitised Napoleonic cadastral records from 1830. This brings together two distinct historical documentary sources. Opening arrangements vary by season; visits outside the designated period are available by appointment.
The Musée-chapelle des Pénitents offers weekly guided tours by reservation in July and August. Outside the peak season, guided tours are available for groups. If you’re planning a guided tour, check the dates before your trip. This makes it possible to combine a visit to the Chapelle with the other cultural sites in Tence while keeping their different visiting arrangements in mind.
Walks and Hikes
The “A la découverte de Tence” walk takes you through the lanes of Tence and past the town’s main historic monuments. The Charreyrons are narrow lanes associated with the fortifications. For a tour focused on the town and its buildings, this walk offers a different emphasis from the longer trails outside the lanes.
The “Le Château du Besset et le Lignon” circular trail leads to the Château du Besset, continues to the Lignon and returns to Tence via the Chemin de la Meyre. It starts at Place de la Mairie, is 7.47 kilometres long and takes about two hours. Check the trail-marking conditions before setting out. A longer circular route is PR040 La Roche druidique de Crouzilhac: it is 12.8 kilometres long, starts and ends in Tence, and is classified as difficult. The two routes therefore differ in both length and the time information available; no duration is given for PR040.
The Circuit du Druide is a signposted circular hike to the Roche Druidique. An explanatory guidebook is available from the tourist office. The information describes this Circuit as a separate trail to the Roche Druidique; by contrast, the route around the château focuses on the Château du Besset, the Lignon and the return via the Chemin de la Meyre.
By the Lignon and in Everyday Life
The natural area at Plan d’eau de Bathelane is about a 15-minute walk from Tence. The “Balade le long du Lignon” leads from the village to this lake. Tence also has a fishing pond with an accessible fishing spot. This local information does not explicitly identify the fishing spot as being at Plan d’eau de Bathelane.
The Occitan linguistic heritage is also part of Tence today: the language remains alive locally and is still spoken. Together with the lanes, monuments and trails, this offers another perspective on the town—beyond its individual attractions.
