Saint Beauzire: Romanesque Architecture, Châteaux and Nature
Accommodation in Saint Beauzire
Saint Beauzire is a destination for travellers interested in church architecture, historic castles and landscapes. Local themes range from a Romanesque church with later wall paintings to a Natura 2000 site with diverse habitats. When choosing a hotel, you could first consider whether cultural history or nature will be the focus of your stay. The area offers different ways to explore both.
Church and architecture
The church of Saint-Beauzire is an example of Auvergnat Romanesque architecture; its distinctive apse is one of the building’s notable features. The wall paintings date from the 19th century and are inspired by medieval paintings. Romanesque architecture and later decoration inspired by medieval models thus stand side by side. The date of its protection is also precise: by decree of 3 June 1957, the apse, choir and transept were partially listed as historic monuments.
Châteaux from different centuries
The Château fort de Bosbomparent was built between the 13th and 15th centuries. Its architecture includes a main residential building, a stair tower adjoining the courtyard, and a large corner tower. These features offer different points of interest when looking at the château: the residential building, the stair tower’s connection to the courtyard, and the striking shape of the tower. Private guided tours of the château are available on request; arrange your visit with the owner in advance.
The Château de Lespinasse was built in the 12th century on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa called Spinatia. Spinatia refers to the former villa on the site; the château is the building constructed there later. It is part of the Route des Châteaux d'Auvergne. The private Château de la Chomette dates from the 19th century, adding a later period to the history of châteaux in Saint Beauzire.
Natura 2000 site and walking trails
The Saint Beauzire Natura 2000 site covers 4.5 hectares and lies within the enclosure of the Château de Lespinasse. From there, you can enjoy a view across the Vendage Valley. The site’s landscape features include chestnut trees, hay meadows and wetlands. Alongside the buildings, these provide specific nature and landscape themes to consider when planning a stay.
Saint Beauzire has two short walking trails bearing the Respirando label. The landscape along the PR427 Le Coudert du Marquis trail is particularly distinctive: it passes through fields and along a wooded area. You can find information both on short trails with a label and on a route featuring named landscape elements. Check trail conditions locally when planning a walk.
To choose between a culture-focused and a nature-focused stay, you can weigh these themes individually: church architecture and paintings, the different building periods of the châteaux, or the landscape around the Natura 2000 site and walking trails.
