Discover Saint-Jean-Lachalm: Heritage and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Saint-Jean-Lachalm
Saint-Jean-Lachalm brings together Romanesque church architecture and a fortified house from the late Middle Ages with hiking and climbing opportunities. The landscape also offers contrasting features: from Mont Recours, views extend across the Allier Valley, while completed landscaping works have shaped the banks of the Marais de Conil. During your stay, you can choose between architectural history, routes and exploring the landscape.
Church architecture and fortified house
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is a Romanesque church with a pointed barrel vault and a square apse. Two oculi are set in the gable wall. Its side chapels were added one after another in the 15th century. The church has been classified as a historic monument since 19 March 1908. The vault, apse and openings in the gable give the church a clearly defined architectural profile.
At Château de Séjallières, a different type of building and a later period take centre stage: it is a fortified house from the 15th century and is considered characteristic of the late medieval fortified houses of Velay. Its history is linked to the lords d’Agrain and to its strategic location on the slopes of the plateau overlooking the Allier. By decree of 13 February 1995, the château was listed as a historic monument. Taken together, the church and château represent different approaches to architectural history: Romanesque religious architecture on the one hand, and a late medieval fortified house on the other.
Hiking trails and Via Ferrata
PR315 “Les villages templiers” is a moderately difficult circular hike in Saint-Jean-Lachalm. The route is 11.2 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 3 hours 15 minutes. For planning, the route also lists 255 metres of ascent, 252 metres of descent and a maximum elevation of 1,272 metres. The route follows in the footsteps of the Templars, whose commandery had influence across the plateau. There are four Petite Randonnée circular trails in the municipality. PR315 thus combines a specific hiking time and a stated elevation profile with a historical theme.
The Via Ferrata des Rochers de la Miramande offers a different focus: it is located above the Allier Valley, combines hiking with climbing and includes three routes. Anyone using the Via Ferrata must wear a helmet. Unlike PR315, its defining feature is not a stated hiking duration but the combination of climbing and hiking across several routes. Both options offer different ways to combine physical activity with views of the landscape or a historical connection.
Landscape along the Allier and Marais de Conil
There are two named viewpoints. Mont Recours is a viewpoint overlooking the Allier Valley. A landscape interpretation panel in Saint-Jean-Lachalm offers a view of the Allier gorges. In the municipality’s open landscapes, bocage hedgerows and dry-stone walls shape the scenery. The landscape can therefore be described not only through its valleys, but also through its characteristic features and boundaries.
Completed works at the Marais de Conil created four depressions. Their maximum depth is 60 centimetres, and their average areas are listed as 1,500, 1,300, 1,200 and 800 square metres. Together, they cover around half a hectare, or 20 percent of the area. The banks were shaped with gentle slopes to support the growth of vegetation and small animals such as amphibians, dragonflies and aquatic insects. The measures are also intended to increase nesting and feeding potential for certain water birds. The described shapes and sizes show how the banks were landscaped, without equating the ecological objectives with a claim about the wildlife present today.
