Chomelix is particularly appealing to travelers who want to include cultural history and outdoor activities in their trip. The Menhir de la Pierre Plantée and the Église Saint-Pierre represent different historical themes; at the same time, hiking and mountain biking routes offer practical ways to explore the landscape. A permanent introductory orienteering course and an outdoor tennis court add to the options.

Cultural History in Chomelix

The Menhir de la Pierre Plantée dates back to the Neolithic period and has been protected as a historic monument since 1889. This very early historical record stands alongside the Église Saint-Pierre, whose history is linked to a castle: the church was its former castle chapel; the castle was destroyed in 1401. The church apse dates from the early 14th century. An apse is the architectural end of a church interior; this feature offers a specific point of reference when learning about the building’s history. The apse and the south aisle are also partly protected as historic monument features. They were designated by decree on January 25, 1980.

Hiking: Compare Route Length and Theme

The Respirando walking route “Au rythme des clochetons” starts in Challes and is easy and 8 km long. Along the way, it passes local heritage sites: assembly houses, bread ovens, washhouses, watering troughs and fountains are among the listed stops. The 17 km “Gorges de l’Arzon” route starts at Place de la Fontaine in Chomelix and follows the Voie Bollène. Near Chomelix-le-Bas, it crosses the Arzon via 47 steps carved into the rock. The routes suit different preferences: the 8 km route is rated easy and passes cultural heritage sites, while the longer route includes a crossing of the Arzon via rock steps.

More Outdoor Activities

The “Les villages du plateau” mountain biking route starts in Chomelix. The route alternates between forests and farmland. Chomelix also has a permanent introductory orienteering course with 18 fixed markers. The outdoor tennis court can be used without a reservation. Check the current status of both facilities locally before visiting. Route details may also be updated, so check the current route before setting out.
