Arsac-en-Velay offers several concrete points of interest for planning a trip: a predominantly rural landscape, the PR529 hiking trail, the Château de Bouzols and recurring events. These topics appeal to different interests and help you tailor your stay around scenery, hiking, architecture or an event date. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider which of these is most important for your travel dates.

Rural landscape and hiking trail

Cultivated slopes bordered by hedges or rows of trees, wooded fringes, fields and pastures define the rural landscape of Arsac-en-Velay. The landscape thus includes both working farmland and areas of trees and woodland. It offers a distinctive view of the commune, alongside its specific buildings and event dates. For route planning, the PR529 is a separate point of reference: the “De Laussonne à Bouzols” hiking trail is 17.38 km long and passes through Arsac-en-Velay and Lantriac.

Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. The distance of the PR529 and the duration of a guided tour of the Château de Bouzols describe different aspects of planning: the trail is measured in kilometres, while the château tour is measured in time. This lets you consider the hike and the tour separately, without treating them as the same kind of activity.

Château de Bouzols: defensive architecture and tours

The Château de Bouzols was built from the 11th century onwards on a steep basalt promontory above the Loire. Its defensive structure gives the impression of two castles stacked one above the other. The basalt promontory describes its striking setting; the stepped appearance comes from the defensive structure and offers a distinctive way to appreciate the château’s architecture.

The entire property is protected as a historic monument and includes the château, its terraces, the chapel, the steward’s house, the stables and the Maison Allirol. It was listed by decree on 2 October 2015. Visits are available only as guided tours. A route lasting about an hour takes visitors through the stables, terraces, citadel, reception rooms and chapel. Since tours are seasonal, check the available dates before travelling.

Events throughout the year

The Livrévasion book festival is organised each year in early April by the local association “au fil des pages”; exact dates may vary. The annual local festival in Arsac-en-Velay takes place on the second Sunday in September, and its programme may change. The two events therefore fall at different times of the year: the book festival is on the calendar in early April, and the local festival in September. If one of them is a deciding factor for your trip, check the exact dates and current programme in advance.

Local produce

GAEC des Ruchers de la Terrasse produces nine varieties of honey. Which varieties are currently available may change. For Rohac, the 2025 producer directory lists dried pasta, mill-ground flour, lentils, cereals and potatoes from Ferme Bio Pellissier. The products listed and opportunities to visit may change; confirm details before planning a visit.
