Arlempdes: Château, Loire and Hikes
Accommodation in Arlempdes
Arlempdes brings together the Château d’Arlempdes and the Église Saint-Pierre with two hikes and a distinctive landscape. One route starts and ends in the village, while another offers a view of Arlempdes from above. This gives you different starting points for planning your trip: you can consider the buildings, route lengths and landscape separately.
Château d’Arlempdes: Visit and history
The Château d’Arlempdes can be visited on a self-guided tour. Concerts and exhibitions are also part of the visitor offering. In summer, groups of more than ten people can reserve a guided tour. This means visitors can choose between a tour without a guide and a reservable guided tour for larger groups. Tickets for the Château are issued in the village at the Le Manoir bar-restaurant.
For 2026, the Château is open from 21 March to mid-October and is closed on Mondays. If you are planning a later trip, check the current visiting hours in advance. The remains of the Château were listed as a historic monument by decree on 27 February 1926. This listing gives the visit a historical context, while the seasonal information is relevant to practical planning.
Église Saint-Pierre and its arcades
The Église Saint-Pierre was classified as a historic monument by decree on 16 September 1907. Its bell-tower arcades date from the 16th century. The church therefore presents two distinct historical reference points: the period of the architectural detail described and its later classification as a monument. Arcades are a series of arches; here, the term refers to a specific feature of the bell tower. Alongside the Château, the church offers a distinct way to explore Arlempdes’s architectural history.
Comparing two hikes
The PR154 La roche des Bonnes-Dames dans le bois is ten kilometres long, is rated very easy, and starts and ends in Arlempdes. The 5.6-kilometre hike “Rencontre entre Loire et volcans” offers a view of the village from above. The PR154 is therefore the longer route; the other hike is shorter and offers a view of Arlempdes as a distinctive feature. You can compare the distances directly when deciding: ten kilometres versus 5.6 kilometres. The PR154 is also rated very easy and starts and ends in Arlempdes, while the shorter hike offers a view from above.
Basalt cliffs and the Loire
A basalt cliff about a hundred metres high towers above Arlempdes. The young, wild Loire surrounds the village on three quarters of its perimeter. This description of the landscape combines two distinct measures: the approximate height of the cliff and the extent to which the river encircles the village. Together, these features offer a distinctive view of Arlempdes, different from the architectural details and hiking distances.
