Yssingeaux: Trails, heritage and regional specialties
Accommodation in Yssingeaux
Yssingeaux offers several ways to plan your trip: historic buildings and museums, hiking trails in the Sucs, and regional specialties. There is also a cycling route towards Raucoules and a regional bus service. Consider whether you would like to focus your trip on heritage, outdoor activities or a mix of both.
Hiking and a town walk
The Sucs around Yssingeaux offer hiking trails with views of the surrounding countryside. Saint-Roch Hill also combines nature and local history: from the summit, you can look out over the surrounding Sucs; there are also two information panels. The Balade Saint-Roch route leads from the town centre via community gardens and the hill to Ard’Huy, the Siaulme and the former tanners’ quarter. This way, you can explore several points of interest in the town along a circular route.
Another way to explore the town’s history is the “Flâneries Histoire & Patrimoine” walking tour. Information panels and QR codes tell the story of Yssingeaux. The game “Des empreintes dans la ville” also takes you through the town’s history and to five symbolic roosters using the free Baludik smartphone app. Check that the app is available before your trip.
Buildings and town history
The town hall is housed in the former summer residence of the bishops of Le Puy. Jean de Bourbon had the former bishop’s castle built towards the end of the 15th century; the municipality acquired it in 1807. La Grenette illustrates another chapter in the town’s history: the former grain hall, dating from the mid-19th century, now houses a cinema, a media library and a Micro-Folie.
The Micro-Folie offers a digital museum, a video game area and a virtual reality experience, as well as content about local heritage. Other religious buildings include the 17th-century Chapelle Notre-Dame des Pénitents. Its features include Romanesque barrel vaults and an old tiled floor with a twelve-metre-long cross. The painting “Les noces de Cana” by Jean Cotelle can be seen in Église Saint-Pierre, which was rebuilt in 1819 and 1827.
Museums and special visitor experiences
The Musée d'Arts et Traditions Populaires in Yssingeaux regularly hosts temporary exhibitions alongside its permanent exhibition. Allow around 60 minutes on average for a self-guided visit. The Musée Saint-Roch is housed in the former chapel of the Yssingeaux hospital.
In Versilhac, the Musée d'Arts et Traditions Populaires uses its exhibitions to recreate rural life at the beginning of the 20th century. Topics include crafts, festivals and a school. Check opening hours before your visit. The Church of the Immaculate Conception in Versilhac, near Yssingeaux, features contemporary stained-glass windows and concrete sculptures by Jean-Paul Six. Guided tours are offered in September for the European Heritage Days and by prior arrangement; check the visiting arrangements in advance.
The École Nationale Supérieure de Pâtisserie campus is located in Château de Montbarnier. Open days include a campus visit, conversations with teachers and students, and an introduction to the hands-on training in the laboratories. As dates may vary, check them before your trip.
Cycling route, specialties and getting there
The 20.5-kilometre section of the Via Fluvia between Yssingeaux and Raucoules starts in Yssingeaux at the car park de l’Antreuil, next to the Gare Routière. The route is paved throughout and alternates between a Véloroute and a Voie verte. Before setting off, check local updates for possible roadworks or changes to the surface.
Regional specialties include Brioche d’Yssingeaux, Douceur des Sucs and Saussac. The brioche was created in 1866 and is made with wheat flour, butter, eggs, orange blossom water and finely chopped orange zest. The Ferme de Treslemont sells dairy products made directly from cow’s and goat’s milk, including yoghurt, faisselles and cheese. Confirm the sales arrangements before visiting.
Yssingeaux has direct access to the RN88. Regional bus line H30 connects Le Puy-en-Velay, Le Pertuis, Yssingeaux and Saint-Étienne. Timetables may change, so check the current services before travelling.
