Allègre appeals to a range of interests: Mont Bar is a highlight for its volcanic landscape, moorland and hiking trails, while historic gates, churches and houses tell the story of the town’s architectural history. These natural and cultural themes offer different starting points for planning your visit—from a hike to exploring individual buildings.

Mont Bar: Volcano and Protected Moorland

Mont Bar is a Strombolian volcano whose crater is home to a peat bog. The bog is protected and designated as a Natura 2000 site. The volcanic landscape and protected wetland are two aspects of the same natural environment. Before visiting, check locally for any access restrictions.

Hiking trails lead to the summit of Mont Bar. As trail access and signage may change, check the latest local information before setting out. The Maison du Mont Bar offers a fun, educational tour covering volcanism, peat bogs, biodiversity and sustainable development. This brings ecological topics into the picture alongside geology.

Hiking Trails with Different Connections to the Town

The PR560 Allègre aux deux volcans hiking route starts and ends in Allègre and leads to the ruins of Château d’Allègre. The first stage of the GR 40 Tour des volcans du Velay runs from Vorey-sur-Arzon to Allègre. Another hiking stage, GRP Chavaniac-Lafayette–Allègre, leads into Allègre via Rue Porte-de-Monsieur.

To compare the routes, the start and end points are especially useful: Allègre is named as both the start and finish of the PR560; the first GR 40 stage runs from Vorey-sur-Arzon to the town, while the GRP stage leads to Allègre via the street named above. Before setting out, check the latest tourist information and route guidance.

Castle Ruins and Historic Buildings

La Potence is the ruin of the southern facade of the former Château d’Allègre. It offers a viewpoint over the rolling landscape of the Velay and traces of former volcanoes. How clearly these can be seen depends on the weather and vegetation. The castle ruins are also a destination on the PR560 hiking route.

The Portail de Monsieur is the southern entrance gate to Château d’Allègre and was built between 1365 and 1435. It is listed in the supplementary inventory of historic monuments. Its two towers are relatively well preserved, and loopholes can be seen on the left-hand tower. At the Porte de Ravel, one of the two flanking towers is relatively well preserved. The gate also retains its hinges and openings for the iron bars.

Two historic houses add to this picture of Allègre’s architectural history. The Hôtel des Grellet was built against the town wall in 1435 and completed in 1485. The Hôtel des Guérins de Pouzols was also built in 1435 and retains its historic stair tower. Construction of the Gothic Église Saint Martin began before 1512 and was completed shortly after 1527. The church was restored in a modern style in 1961 and 1962.

The nave of the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-l’Oratoire was built in 1650. To this day, a procession takes place on the Feast of the Rosary, going from Allègre’s parish church to the chapel; the exact date may vary. The church’s construction history and the continuing procession offer two different perspectives on the town’s religious heritage.
