Traubach-le-Bas brings together a range of interests: architectural history at the Chapelle de pèlerinage Saint-Fridolin, scenery along the “Route du lait” circular trail, and cheese-making and beekeeping. The chapel and hiking route offer different highlights from a visit to Famille Riche, which is arranged on request. When planning your stay, you can therefore consider whether culture, outdoor activity, or an arranged insight into beekeeping is your priority.

Chapelle Saint-Fridolin: History and Architecture

The Chapelle de pèlerinage Saint-Fridolin is a pilgrimage chapel. Historically, Traubach-le-Bas had no parish church, only a simple chapel. The Saint-Fridolin Chapel was rebuilt in 1829–1830 on the site of an older chapel dating from the 18th century. Its former role as a place of pilgrimage was associated with protecting herds, especially draft animals. This history sets the chapel apart both from a parish church and from a destination visited solely for its architecture.

The building’s form can also be described in specific terms: the choir ends in a three-sided apse oriented to the northeast. Four stained-glass windows illuminate the nave, and a small wooden bell tower crowns the end of the nave. Together with its reconstruction on the site of the older chapel, these features offer several points of interest if you are interested in the history of religious architecture.

Route du lait: Route and Scenery

The “Route du lait” circular trail is about 6 km long, with around 60 m of elevation gain. According to its description, a summer hike began at the parking area in front of and behind Traubach-le-Bas town hall. In the route description published in 2019, the circular trail was marked with a green ring, except for the section between points 5 and 1. Check the trail markers before setting out, as these details come from an older route description.

The 2019 description mentions views of the Black Forest and the Vosges and leads to the Oratoire de la Vierge. It describes a bench there, as well as views of Traubach-le-Haut and the Vosges. The view from the Oratoire is therefore distinct from the general scenery mentioned for the circular trail. Other sections of the route include a stand of beech trees and a tall stand of fir trees. According to the description, it was possible to walk down to the pond from below a small chalet. Check the conditions at the Oratoire and at the bench on site; current trail conditions should also be taken into account before your hike.

The address is 53 rue principale in Traubach-le-Bas. If you plan to visit, confirm the address before setting out and check product availability in advance. Cheese-making is a separate highlight from the beekeeping visit, which is arranged on request.

Beekeeping Visit with Famille Riche

Famille Riche organizes tours at its premises in Traubach-le-Bas to introduce visitors to beekeeping; visits are arranged on request. The tour includes observing two glass-fronted beehives, as well as a presentation and tasting of hive products. The visit lasts between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours. If you plan this visit, confirm access, tasting details, and the duration when booking. This makes the beekeeping tour distinct from a visit focused on the raw-milk products of Ferme du Roetling.
