Galfingue: Church Art and a Circular Walk
Accommodation in Galfingue
Galfingue can be explored through three specific themes: the history and furnishings of Saint-Gangolphe Parish Church, the family collection at the Domaine de Maurice, and a circular walk. If you are planning a stay, you can choose between church art, a guided visit to the Domaine and several hours on foot.
Saint-Gangolphe: Building History and Church Art
The present-day Saint-Gangolphe Parish Church was built in 1783 and restored in 1868 to a design by Schacre. Its history goes back further: the church was first mentioned in 1260, destroyed by the English in 1376 and rebuilt in 1469. This sequence spans several clearly distinct historical periods, from medieval records to the construction of the present-day parish church.
The church complex includes a monumental Calvary. Another focal point is the high altar ensemble, titled “The Glorification of Saint Gangolphus.” Its altarpiece superstructure is made of carved, painted and gilded wood, as well as stucco. Two flying angels draw back a richly decorated curtain to reveal the glorification of Saint Gangolphus; statues of Saint Agatha and Saint Augustine stand beside it. The materials, figures and religious subject offer several aspects to appreciate in a single work.
The Domaine de Maurice and an Alsatian Family Collection
The Domaine de Maurice offers a different cultural focus. A family collection passed down from generation to generation evokes Alsace in times gone by. Maurice is a meticulous collector with a passion for marquetry, bringing a vanished world to life. The focus here is on both the inherited collection and his personal passion for collecting.
The Domaine de Maurice is located at 3 rue d’Illfurth and can be visited as part of a guided tour. As the visiting schedule may change, check the current tour options in advance.
The “L'Étang du Riedweiher par Galfingue” Circular Walk
For time outdoors, the “L'Étang du Riedweiher par Galfingue” circular walk offers a specific option. It starts behind the Galfingue multipurpose hall, at 24 Rue du 25 Novembre 1944. There is a car park there, and the route returns to its starting point.
The easy walk is 9.16 kilometres long and takes an average of 2 hours and 45 minutes. Its length and duration make it easy to plan as a standalone activity. The route also includes a discovery trail where you can spot numerous trees. Local trail and parking conditions may change; check them before your walk.
Christmas Market in Galfingue
Galfingue’s Christmas market was held for at least the second time in 2025. That year’s event featured decorated chalets, seasonal treats and Christmas carols. If you are planning a visit around the Christmas market, check the dates for the relevant year.
