Discover Wegscheid
Accommodation in Wegscheid
Wegscheid brings together the Rossberg massif and a historic look at silver mining in the Soultzbach valley. A 19.6 km circular hike starts in the village; Chalet Stahlberg and a guided tour of the Mines d'Argent de Wegscheid are also highlights for visitors. Hiking, a mine tour and historic sites offer different ways to explore the area.
Circular hike and Rossberg
The hiking route âDe Wegscheidt au Rossberg par la rĂ©serve des volcans, version longueâ is a 19.6 km circular hike starting in Wegscheid. It goes around the Rossberg massif and returns via the Rimbach Pass and the Stahlberg shelter. The route information comes from a 2023 publication; check the route locally before setting out. The distance makes this a full outing that you should take into account when planning your time.
The ForĂȘt des Volcans lies in the Massif du Rossberg and is overlooked by the Vogelsteine rocks. The Vogelsteine are at an altitude of 1,164 m. The route and the forest are therefore connected to the same massif, but in different ways: the hike goes around it, while the ForĂȘt des Volcans lies within it.
Chalet Stahlberg and a break
Chalet Stahlberg is on the heights of Wegscheid, at the entrance to the ForĂȘt des Volcans. It is accessible on foot only. A stove is available there to warm up. If you plan to stop at the chalet, factor in the walk to reach it and check before your visit whether the stove is still available.
Silver mining and guided tour
The guided tour of the Mines d'Argent de Wegscheid explores two authentic mine galleries. A geology guide from the Maison de la Terre accompanies the tour. Visitors interested in mining can enjoy a guided introduction to the galleries and their underground surroundings. Check current visitor arrangements before planning a specific visit.
In the Soultzbach valley, the mining district was an important silver-mining centre in the 16th century. This period provides a clear historical reference point for the area's silver-mining history and distinguishes it from today's guided mine-tour experience.
Another historic building
Wegscheid is also home to the surviving building of the former royal tinplate manufactory. It offers a different historical perspective from silver mining: here, the focus is on the former manufactory. Before visiting, check the building's condition and whether it is accessible.
Your excursion plans can therefore include two distinct options: a 19.6 km loop around the Rossberg massif and a guided tour of two mine galleries. The historical information about the mining district and former manufactory adds further points of interest to these activities. Consider whether hiking, a guided tour or exploring the area's history is your priority during your stay.
