Wolxheim combines a long history of winegrowing with architectural, canal-building and sacred-art heritage. The Chapelle Saint-Denis, the Canal district and the Grand Cru Altenberg offer different highlights for your stay. There are also named routes for cyclists and hikers. When choosing a destination, you can therefore consider whether you are particularly interested in historic buildings, vineyard landscapes or trails.

Chapels and historic landmarks

The Chapelle Saint-Denis is located on Chemin du cimetière in the Le Canal district. The building dates from the 15th century; it was first mentioned in 1342. Admission is free, and you can visit without a guide. Check these visiting arrangements in advance.

Inside the Chapelle Saint-Denis are two paintings by Carola Sorg and a two-headed statue of Saint Denis. A statue of the Sacred Heart was erected on the Horn in 1912 as a symbol of peace. The sandstone and limestone quarries are also part of the area's history: they were exploited by Vauban from 1681 onwards.

The Canal district and cycling

Wolxheim's Canal district was established in 1682 during the construction of the Canal de la Bruche, which connects Wolxheim with Strasbourg. The waterway is 20 kilometres long and has eleven locks. Both the origins of the district and the canal's dimensions shape the area's historic connection to the waterway.

The former towpaths along the Canal de la Bruche have been converted into a cycle path. The “Du canal de la Bruche au vignoble” circular cycling route reaches Wolxheim; the large gates built by Vauban are installed there. Visitors exploring Wolxheim by bicycle can therefore use both the converted towpath and a named circular route as concrete points of reference.

Winegrowing, views and hiking trails

Written records of winegrowing in Wolxheim date back to 742. The Grand Cru Altenberg is part of the winegrowing area, and Wolxheim is famous for its well-known Riesling. Altenberg lies at the foot of the Horn and has a particularly dry microclimate. These details place Wolxheim's winegrowing in a historical and geographical context.

The “Point de vue sur l'Altenberg” viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Grand Cru Altenberg. On a clear day, Strasbourg Cathedral can also be seen beyond the Horn. The Sentier viticole de Wolxheim and the Sentier des poètes lead to the viewpoint. Visiting the Sentier viticole de Wolxheim during the grape harvest is not recommended; harvest dates vary from year to year.

For a different hiking destination, the “The Chapels between Vineyards and Canal” trail leads to the Chapelle Marie Auxiliatrice in Wolxheim. The named destinations are therefore clearly distinct: the two routes mentioned above lead to the viewpoint, while this hiking trail leads to the chapel. You can choose accordingly, depending on whether views of the Altenberg or another local landmark matter more to you.
