Cosswiller brings together local production, village history and a rural landscape. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Cosswiller, these themes can help guide your travel decision: brewing culture, farm products, the Temple calviniste and the character of the village. Which matters most depends on whether you are interested in a reserved group visit, buying farm products, or the area’s history and landscape.

Brewery and Local Products

Brasserie La Mercière is a local organic craft brewery in Cosswiller. It makes pilsner, wheat beer, amber ale, IPA, stout, as well as smoked and fruit beers; the product range may change. Groups can book a brewery visit followed by a tasting. The brasserie also sells beer directly and has a bistro area. If the tasting is a deciding factor for you, take the group reservation requirement into account and check the operating details in advance.

Ferme du Diebach makes cheeses named Kirchberg, Schneeberg and Goldberg. It also sells eggs, meat, juices, organic bread, flour, and fruit and vegetables directly from the farm; the product selection may change. Its focus is therefore on several food categories, not just the three named cheeses. In contrast to the brasserie, Ferme du Diebach is centered on buying farm products rather than beer and tastings.

The Circuit découverte de Cosswiller offers opportunities to meet local personalities and producers. It thus has a different focus from buying beer or farm products: the emphasis is on personal encounters rather than specific products.

Temple calviniste: History and Architecture

After the Thirty Years’ War, Cosswiller was rebuilt as a Reformed Protestant village. The Temple calviniste was built in 1819; its bell tower dates from 1843. These dates distinguish the building from the tower: the bell tower is dated later than the Temple. Architecturally, the Temple has a rectangular floor plan, two tiers of windows on the eaves sides, and five bays. This allows the overall form and its features to be described separately: the floor plan identifies the shape, while the window tiers and bays provide further architectural details. The village’s history and the building’s details answer different questions: the reconstruction history places Cosswiller in its historical context, while the form and dates relate to the Temple itself. The Temple can be reached via a small paved road.

Landscape and Village Character

Cosswiller lies in the foothills of the Vosges; the small Sathbach stream flows through a hollow in the valley. The municipality covers 1,575 hectares in total, of which 1,262 hectares are forest. The forest therefore accounts for approximately four-fifths of the stated area and is the larger share by land area. While the hectare figures describe the municipality as a whole, the Sathbach identifies a specific feature of the local landscape. Cosswiller has largely retained its rural, village character.
