Historic Places and the City’s History

Zamkova Hora is a public square on the former site of a castle dating from the 9th century. It is also a park where visitors can relax and get to know the city. A monument in the center commemorates the founding of the city. Its inscription reads: “In 884, the city of Zhytomyr was founded here.” The year is therefore part of the monument’s wording.

The former castle site and the administrative building point to different layers of the city’s history. In the city center, the ruins of the Jesuit monastery are considered the city’s oldest building. They are designated a monument of architecture and history of national significance.

Museums: Space Exploration and Traditional Crafts

The Serhiy Korolyov Memorial House Museum opened in 1970. A few years after opening, it became part of the Cosmonautics Museum. The “Cosmos” exhibition at the S. P. Korolyov Cosmonautics Museum includes a 1:1 scale engineering model of the landing module of the Vega station, a diagram of the Vega spacecraft’s descent through the atmosphere of Venus, and the project emblem. The exhibition therefore focuses on space technology and a specific project.

The Remisnychyi Dvir Folk Museum is dedicated to a wide-ranging collection: in specially arranged pavilions and museum areas, visitors can see several thousand original exhibits and learn more about their history and use. These include tools from the previous or the one before that century, which visitors can handle. Some items are still in working order. Thus, as well as viewing the collection, handling the tools is also part of the museum experience described here.

A cathedral in central Zhytomyr was consecrated in 1805 under the title of the Holy Martyr Sophia. The two consecration dates provide specific historical points of reference; the surviving fragments at St. Michael’s Cathedral also offer a detail of sacred art.

Botanical Garden and the Landscape along the Teteriv River

The Botanical Garden of the Zhytomyr National Agroecological University is a nature reserve of national significance. It covers 35.4 hectares on the banks of the Putyatynka River, a tributary of the Teteriv, and is an organizational unit of the university. The access restrictions are important for planning your visit: the garden is not open to the public. Entry is only possible as part of a guided tour or for a wedding photo session.

An observation platform overlooking the Teteriv River is located 80 meters from Zamkova Hora. Near Zhytomyr, a granite rock rises on the banks of the Teteriv, with a summit stone shaped like a human head. These landscape features are quite different from the protected garden: here, the focus is on the river view and the unusual rock formation.
