Explore Zhytomyr Oblast through its very different destinations: Korosten combines an annual festival with monuments in Drevliansky Park. In Verkhivnia, the Hanski Estate and its literary history take center stage. Kamianne Selo adds a landscape highlight, with a field of large boulders. To plan your trip, start by choosing the places and themes you want to shape your stay.

Korosten: Festival and Monuments in Drevliansky Park

The International Deruny Festival takes place every September in Drevliansky Park in Korosten. Dates may vary. Several monuments also define the park beyond the festival: these include a model of the wooden fortifications of the ancient city and a monument to the Drevlyan prince Mal.

A monument to Princess Olga stands on the riverbank at the foot of the cliff. According to local legend, she spent the final years of her life in Iskorosten, the city she had destroyed. On the opposite bank, monuments commemorate Dobrynya Nikitich, who is considered a native of Korosten, as well as the Drevlyan princess Malusha and her son, the future Prince Volodymyr the Great. The attribution to Dobrynya should be understood as a tradition; the story about Olga is explicitly told as a legend.

A different motif awaits you at the park entrance: there stands a monument to a deruny potato pancake. Together with the festival, it references the name Deruny, while the park’s other monuments draw on historical figures and a legend. Different cultural themes thus sit side by side in the same park.

Architecture and Literature in Verkhivnia

The Hanski Estate in Verkhivnia is a monument to history, architecture and garden-park culture. The park was laid out in the late 18th century; the palace was built in 1800 in the classical style. The Hanski Palace is also considered an architectural monument of significance to both architectural and literary history. The park and the building each give the place its own historical connection.

Honoré de Balzac is also associated with the estate: he settled there in 1847 and wrote his best-known plays on the estate. The place therefore combines a specific architectural history with a literary stop, without implying that Balzac stayed there continuously.

Museum of Cosmonautics and Rocky Landscapes

In Zhytomyr, the S. P. Korolyov National Museum of Cosmonautics explores space from scientific, philosophical and cultural perspectives. It is described as the only museum of cosmonautics in Ukraine. This focus differs from the historical and literary themes in Verkhivnia and Korosten, offering a distinct point of interest for trip planning.

Kamianne Selo offers a landscape contrast to the architectural monuments. The 15-hectare field of large boulders lies in a forest area managed by the Zamyslovytsia Forestry, east of the village of Rudnia-Zamyslovytska in Zhytomyr Oblast. Those interested in a geologically shaped landscape will find a different focus here than at the region’s monuments and estates.

A Regional Route as Another Option

The official route description presents “Zhytomyrshchyna in People” as a three-day tourist route in the wider region for travelers with their own vehicle and organized groups. The official route description lists the Maksym Rylskyi Country House Museum in Romanivka as a stop; the building was once his home. Check the route’s current availability before your trip.

For hotel research, a simple approach is to first decide which destination will shape your stay, then tailor your hotel search to your preferred location.
