Berdyansk lies on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov. This provides a clear geographical reference for planning a trip, alongside cultural and historical themes: museums, historic buildings, and protected landscapes in the surrounding area offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Berdyansk, you can first consider whether the coastal setting, the city’s history, or the surrounding landscape is especially important for your trip. The following features can help you distinguish between these priorities.

Protected landscapes in the surrounding area

Near Berdyansk is the 215-hectare “Head of Berdiansk Spit” landscape reserve, which is of local significance. Also in the surrounding area is the 564-hectare “Berda River Flood Plain” national landscape reserve on the Berdiansk Spit. The areas make the difference clear: the “Berda River Flood Plain,” at 564 hectares, is larger than the “Head of Berdiansk Spit,” at 215 hectares. Their designations also differ: one area is of local significance, while the other is a national landscape reserve. The location on the Berdiansk Spit is specified explicitly for the “Berda River Flood Plain.”

City history and collections

The Berdyansk History Museum opened on September 17, 2005. Its five exhibition halls cover three periods in the city’s development: the pre-Soviet period, the Soviet period, and the period of independent Ukraine. The exhibits thus arrange the city’s history chronologically into three sections. Smaller display cases offer a different focus: they provide information about Berdyansk’s sister cities. Samovars and irons from the late 19th to the early 20th century add historical everyday objects to these themes.

The P.P. Schmidt Memorial House Museum, which opened in 1980, has a different focus. Two ground-floor halls are dedicated to the Schmidt family and to the life and work of Lieutenant P.P. Schmidt. By comparison, the Berdyansk History Museum, with its five halls, covers three longer periods in the city’s development. The two museums therefore have different thematic focuses: one on city history and its periods, the other on a family and a specifically named person. This distinction can help you identify the topics that particularly interest you on your trip.

Historic buildings

Two listed buildings also represent different aspects of Berdyansk’s history. The Upper Berdyansk Lighthouse dates from 1878 and is listed as a monument of science and technology. The Berdyansk Karaim Kenesa dates from 1899 and is listed as a monument of architecture and history. The dates are 21 years apart; the two buildings are also listed under different designations. Together, they complement the museum themes with built heritage, each with its own historical classification.
