Zaporizhzhia offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: a large island in the Dnipro, preserved historic buildings, architecture from several periods, and specific leisure activities. The places and activities below offer starting points for exploring the city according to your interests.

Khortytsia in the Dnipro

Khortytsia is the largest island in the Dnipro. It covers about 23.5 km², almost ten percent of the area of present-day Zaporizhzhia. This makes the island a prominent geographical reference point for the city. It offers a natural focal point alongside Zaporizhzhia’s historic districts and buildings.

Historic Districts and Architecture

In present-day Zaporizhzhia, the historic district of Staryi Oleksandrivsk has been preserved. It includes significant architectural monuments, parks, green spaces, museums and theaters. Most of the district’s buildings remain standing today and are considered architectural and historical monuments. Historic buildings are thus complemented by other cultural and green spaces.

Another architectural focal point is Social City, also known as the Sixth Settlement: a residential complex in Zaporizhzhia. The complex includes rare examples of 1920s and 1930s Constructivism, as well as postwar buildings in the Stalinist Empire style. Significant architectural monuments include Round House, Communal Houses and Propylaea Houses. They also include Tower on the coke-chemical plant building, Lavrov Houses, Outpatient Town, Kozliner Tower, Monument to Mykola Rybnikov, Monument to Industrial Zaporizhzhia and M. Hlinka Concert Hall. Social City was built over three years, at the same time as the DniproHES hydroelectric power station and the Zaporizhzhia Metallurgical Complex. Its construction history and varied styles give the residential complex a distinctive architectural character.

Views, Garden and Activities

From the observation point at the Municipal Palace of Children and Youth Creativity, you can see Khortytsia Island with the historic cultural complex “Zaporizka Sich” and one of the Preobrazhensky Bridges. This bridge was built between 1949 and 1952. The view of the island and bridge thus brings together two specific city landmarks and a historical date.

The Municipal Children’s Botanical Garden of Zaporizhzhia was founded in 1958 and is part of Ukraine’s nature reserve fund. Its greenhouses include a winter garden, a cactus house and a lemon house. The garden offers families walks and guided tours. The named greenhouse areas and guided tours offer different ways to explore the garden.

A page from 2024 describes an interactive, themed game tour for children of early primary-school age. Through folk games, entertainment and competitions, they learn about the history of the Cossacks. Visitors can skateboard and ride sports bicycles in Victory Park. At the Museum of Experiments, visitors carry out experiments themselves and explore the laws of physics and optical illusions. Before planning, check whether the game tour can currently be booked, whether the garden and museum are open, and what facilities are available at Victory Park.
