Kolodyazhne is a destination for travelers who want to combine their stay with the history and literature of Lesya Ukrainka. At its heart is the Lesya Ukrainka Literary-Memorial Museum on her family’s estate. The history of the estate’s construction, the memorial and literary exhibitions, and the garden’s features offer different perspectives on the place. If you are considering Kolodyazhne as a base for your stay, these topics can help you assess the destination in light of your cultural interests.

The estate, the poet’s lifetime, and the museum

The museum is located on the estate that Lesya Ukrainka’s father, P. A. Kosach, acquired in 1868. The poet lived in Kolodiazhne from 1882 to 1907, with some interruptions; the museum opened on July 10, 1949. These dates mark different milestones: the acquisition of the estate, the writer’s period of residence, and the museum’s later opening. The estate was acquired before she lived there, and the museum opened after her residence ended.

Two memorial houses with distinct histories

The memorial exhibition is housed in the poet’s White House and her father’s Gray House. The White House was built in 1890 as a literary chalet wing for the older children. Petro Kosach had the Gray House built in 1896. The memorial houses are historic monuments; their interiors reconstruct the furnishings from Lesya Ukrainka’s lifetime. The two houses can be distinguished by different details: the White House is described by its architectural form and original purpose, while the Gray House is described by its commissioner and the year it was built.

Exhibitions and collection

The museum features a memorial exhibition and a literary exhibition housed in three rooms. Four halls in the literary museum display documents and exhibits about Lesya Ukrainka’s life and work. The main collection comprises more than 5,900 museum objects, including memorial objects. The reference to three rooms describes how the two exhibition sections are housed; the four halls relate to the literary section. The memorial exhibition is connected with the houses and their reconstructed furnishings, while the literary exhibition presents the writer’s life and work through documents and exhibits.

Park and memorials

Behind the estate is a forest park established in honor of the writer’s 100th birthday. The garden features a fountain named Lesyn kadub; deep in the estate garden there is also a bronze bust of Lesya Ukrainka, created by sculptor V. Skolozdra. The park commemorates the writer’s birthday, while the fountain’s name and the sculptor identify the two other memorials.
