Pul'mo: St. Nicholas Icon and a Circular Trail in the Surrounding Region
Accommodation in Pul'mo
St. Nicholas Church in Pul'mo houses an icon of St. Nicholas. In the wider area, the ecological nature trail runs through Shatsk National Park. Together, a specific work of sacred art and a route alongside several lakes represent different themes you can take into account as you plan your trip.
The Icon in St. Nicholas Church
The icon depicts St. Nicholas. Rectangular scenes from his life surround the figure on three sides. The image thus combines a central portrait of the saint with several narrative motifs. The rectangular shape and arrangement of the images give the composition a clear spatial order: Nicholas is at the center, framed by scenes on either side.
This composition is particularly revealing when considering the cultural subject. It is not only the figure of the saint that is depicted, but also how scenes from his life are connected to him. If you are interested in religious art, the icon offers a specific point of reference in Pul'mo. It is a clearly identifiable subject, distinct from the landscape of the wider region.
The Ecological Nature Trail in the Wider Area
The 5.8 km ecological nature trail runs through Shatsk National Park along the shores of Lakes Pulemetske, Klimivske, and Chorne Male. The circular trail starts and ends on the shore of Lake Pulemetske. The nature trail also runs between Lake Pulemetske and Lake Klimivske. The three lakes provide a clear landscape setting for the route, while its length of 5.8 km gives you a concrete measure of the distance.
An observation tower stands a few hundred metres from the start of the nature trail. From there, you can look out across the surrounding area and the entire length of Lake Pulemetske. The nature trail starts and ends on the shore of this lake. Both the route between the lakes and the view of Lake Pulemetske from the tower are useful for finding your bearings.
Different Shorelines on the Same Circular Trail
The shores are not all the same. Along the circular trail, the shore of Lake Pulemetske is sandy and partly covered with low reeds. At Lake Klimivske, the land leading to the shore is marshy and covered with reeds and other wetland vegetation; access to the water is not possible there.
So when considering the lake landscape, it is worth noting not only the number of lakes but also the differences between their shores. The ecological nature trail presents two contrasting shorelines: the sandy area at Lake Pulemetske and the marshy, vegetation-covered land at Lake Klimivske. Together with the observation tower and the circular trail, these features give a more precise picture of regional themes that may be relevant to your travel plans alongside the cultural landmark in Pul'mo.
