When planning a trip to Nowomyrhorod, two themes sit side by side: the town’s architectural history and the landscape of nearby Panski Hory. The architectural examples range from churches dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries to a hospital complex built between 1911 and 1913. Panski Hory adds a hillside, floodplain, meadow steppe, and natural spring to the historical focus. This allows you to decide whether your trip will focus primarily on architectural history or also take in the surrounding landscape.

Town History and Churches

The Novomyrhorod Local History Museum was founded in 2003 and is located in the town center in a former Jewish private home dating from the early 20th century. The museum’s founding and the building’s former use come together here: the museum was established in 2003, while the house dates from an earlier period. For your travel plans, this offers a tangible connection to the town’s history that goes beyond individual architectural features. If you plan to visit the museum, please check current access arrangements in advance.

The two churches offer a clear comparison across time. St. Elijah’s Church is an architectural monument dating from 1786. St. Nicholas Church was built in 1809 on the site of an earlier wooden church, as a brick church in the eclectic style, and is also an architectural monument. St. Nicholas brings together the date with details about its predecessor building, material, and style; for St. Elijah, the date is the key detail. There are 23 years between the construction dates. This short interval makes the sequence easy to follow, while St. Nicholas’s building history offers an additional point of architectural comparison.

Other Architectural Monuments and Their Dates

Buildings beyond the churches also reflect different functions and periods. The former shop building on Sobornosti Street dates from the late 19th century and is an architectural monument. The gymnasium, built in 1891, is also among them. The Zemstvo Bank building dates from the early 20th century and is one of the town’s architectural monuments. The hospital complex is later still: its main, treatment, and service buildings form a complex dating from 1911 to 1913. This overview therefore spans churches, shop, school, and bank buildings, as well as several parts of a hospital. Their different functions make Nowomyrhorod’s architectural history more concrete than a mere list of dates.

Panski Hory Nearby

Near Nowomyrhorod, Panski Hory lies between Nowomyrhorod and Kostiantynivka in the valley of the Velyka Vys River. The 8.1-hectare area includes a hillside on the river’s high right bank and part of its floodplain. The hillside and floodplain give the area different landscape features. Flowering meadow-steppe plants grow on the slopes, including mountain clover, tansy, gray and early speedwell, field carnation, and cornflower. The variety of flowers gives the slopes a distinctive landscape character and provides a contrast to the town’s historic buildings. A natural spring is another feature of Panski Hory; its water was studied by the Ukrainian Research Institute of Medical Rehabilitation and Balneology.
