At Sokilska Rock in Tyudiv, the Shevchenko memorial and the landscape come together. Two tours also pass through the village: a hiking route from Kosiv via Babyn and the Sokilska Rocks to Tyudiv, and a cycling loop that starts and ends in Kosiv. Alongside the history of the village, visitors can therefore choose from different ways to explore the area.

Shevchenko Memorial in Tyudiv

At the end of the 19th century, folk artists erected a monument to Taras Shevchenko in Tyudiv. Local stonemasons erected an obelisk to the poet on Sokilska Rock. Local tradition describes this obelisk as the first folk monument to Shevchenko in Ukraine and worldwide. It was destroyed in the 1930s; accounts differ as to the circumstances. The life-size monument to Taras Shevchenko on the rock was restored in 1990.

Rocks, Waterfall, and Landscape

Sokilska Rock lies within the territory of Tyudiv. The Sikavka Waterfall marks the end of the rock; Velykyi Rozhen begins beyond the waterfall. For geographical orientation, this gives a clear sequence from the rock to the waterfall and then to the area beyond. The Shevchenko monument on the rock connects this description of the landscape with the village’s cultural history.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

A hiking route runs from Kosiv via Babyn and the Sokilska Rocks to Tyudiv. It is 15 km long, has an elevation difference of 453 m, and takes 4–5 hours according to the route information. These figures answer different planning questions: the distance describes the route, the elevation difference adds its vertical component, and the duration gives an indication of the time required. Since the tour ends in Tyudiv and starts in Kosiv, it is described as a route between two places, not as a loop.

The cycling route starts in Kosiv and goes via Horod, Sokolivka, Yavoriv, the Sokil Ridge, Velykyi Rozhen, and Tyudiv, as well as Stari Kuty and Kuty, before returning to Kosiv. The loop is up to 50 km long, takes seven hours according to the route information, has an elevation gain of 1,197 m, and is marked in brown. Tyudiv lies between Velykyi Rozhen and Stari Kuty; both the start and finish are in Kosiv.

The routes differ mainly in their course and time commitment: the hike goes from Kosiv to Tyudiv, while the cycling route returns to Kosiv. The stated times are 4–5 hours for hiking and seven hours by bike; the routes are 15 km and up to 50 km long, respectively. The elevation figures are also described differently: an elevation difference of 453 m for the hike and an elevation gain of 1,197 m for the loop. This lets you compare the endpoint, duration, and overall length of the two tours.

Check local conditions for the relevant route before setting out.
