Kryvyi Rih offers visitors a range of distinct themes: the geological features of the MODR Rocks, protected landscapes, botanical paths, as well as historic architecture, art and regional history. If you choose the city as your destination, you can explore these areas separately rather than grouping them under a single image of the city. To get your bearings, consider whether you are more interested in rock formations and views, peaceful garden paths, or architecture, exhibitions and the region’s history.

Geology and Protected Landscapes

Balka Pivnichna Chervona is designated a landscape reserve of national significance in Kryvyi Rih. The MODR Rocks offer a different kind of natural attraction: they are a natural monument covering an area of 62 hectares, and were granted this status in 1975. The designations differ: the reserve category is the main feature of Balka Pivnichna Chervona, while the MODR Rocks also stand out for their geological character. For planning your trip, these are two distinct ways to explore the city’s natural side.

Exposed iron ore formations define the MODR Rocks. Visitors can view these outcrops on a walk among the rocks, with views opening up from different heights. The walk offers two specific impressions: visible iron-rich rock and changing perspectives. Views from different heights add another dimension to the formations at this natural monument.

Botanical Garden and Walks

The Kryvyi Rih Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is a stop on the “Staleva Volia” route. Its peaceful paths invite visitors to take a stroll, while seasonal blooms add another highlight. Unlike the MODR Rocks, where iron ore formations and views define the natural setting, here the focus is on the paths and flowers. This makes it possible to compare two distinct aspects of the city’s natural attractions: a stroll through the garden and the geological features of the rocks.

Old Town, Art and Regional History

The “Staleva Volia” route passes through the historic center of Kryvyi Rih and by the architecture of the Old Town. Mershavtsev Park is part of the walk. The route also leads to the Artkraftoil art gallery, whose exhibitions feature contemporary art. The architecture, park and gallery provide different cultural points of interest along the route: the historic cityscape, a park as a stop on the walk, and contemporary art in the exhibitions.

The Kryvyi Rih City Museum of History and Local Lore offers another perspective. It opened in 1960 and presents the region’s cultural and historical heritage from the Stone Age to the present day. The museum therefore covers a broad span of time. The art gallery has a different focus: its exhibitions feature contemporary art. So if you are interested in the city’s cultural offerings, the main difference between the two is their focus—regional history across a long period on the one hand, and contemporary art on the other.
