Vlčkovce: Landscape, Cycling Route and Local Life

A cycling route runs through Vlčkovce; the protected Vlčkovský háj lies near the left bank of the Dudváh. Together with culinary events, art and architectural history, these offer several different ways to explore the area during a stay. The municipality lies in the fertile Danubian Lowland, at the transition between the subregions of the hills and the Danube Plain. Trnava also provides a practical reference point for your journey: Vlčkovce is 10 km away and can be reached by public bus in 10 minutes. Check the timetable for your travel day before setting off, as exact times may change.

Natural Surroundings of the Dudváh

The Vlčkovský háj protected area lies near the left bank of the Dudváh, on the boundary between the cadastral areas of Vlčkovce and Majcichov. The grove protects a remnant of an oak, elm and ash floodplain forest, where endangered plant and animal species occur. Vlčkovský háj is also home to an abundance of snowdrops. This spring flower adds a distinctive seasonal feature to the floodplain forest.

Cycling Route and Activities

The Cyrilo-metodská cycling route passes through Vlčkovce and is 73 km long in total. Leisure cyclists can ride just one section of the route, so there is no need to plan your tour around the entire distance. Another local activity is the traditional Vlčkovský Silvestrovský beh zdravia: its eighth edition took place on 31 December 2025. The race started and finished at the Vlčkovce sports complex, while the adult course ran through the village streets. The cycling route, which can be ridden in sections, and this specifically dated New Year's Eve race offer two different ways to enjoy physical activity.

Culinary Traditions

The annual “Vlčkovská klbáska” was held for the 13th time on 28 February 2026. A total of 55 sausage samples were judged; anonymous samples were scored for taste, smell, appearance and overall impression, then ranked. The traditional “Jedlá starých materí” event also reached its 22nd edition in 2026. Wine tastings are another traditional activity in Vlčkovce. If you would like to include a culinary event in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

Architecture, Art and Local History

The Church of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux was built in 1930 to a design by architect Michal Milan Harminc. Its single-nave structure has a transept and an asymmetrically positioned west tower; the exterior is inspired by Romanesque architecture. The present church stands on the site of an older place of worship, from which several sculptures and paintings were incorporated into the interior. The building thus brings together the 1930 design and elements from its predecessor.

Sculpture is also connected with the village: Fraňo Štefunko, who was born in Vlčkovce, was a sculptor and visual artist. In 1968, he received the title “National Artist” in recognition of his life's work. His works can be seen, among other places, in the municipal office and the primary school; they include a statue of Peter Michal Bohúň.

The village's history also includes the Retzer family mill, whose history dates back to the 16th century, and the former sugar factory complex dating from 1925. Vidiecky dom Vlčkovce was officially opened on 6 October 2017 and made accessible to the public that day.
