Štefanov lies at the transition from the Chvojnická pahorkatina hills to the Borská nížina lowlands. Visitors considering a stay here will find a range of points of interest: a Neo-Gothic church with an older predecessor, small examples of religious folk art, and a landscape shaped by the Myjava floodplain and agricultural land.

Church and Architectural History

The Neo-Gothic Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria was built in 1937 on the site of an older church dating from 1561. Its history therefore encompasses two clearly distinct periods of construction: the present church and its 16th-century predecessor. The present church has a three-aisled interior, a polygonal-ended presbytery and a projecting tower. The main altar features a painting of St. Catherine by E. Massányi. Its floor plan, tower placement and altar painting give the church a clearly defined architectural and artistic profile.

Religious Heritage in the Village

Several smaller structures and works of art add to the picture of the village’s history. In the village centre, by the stream, stands a wayside statue of St. John of Nepomuk, a folk stone carving from the late 19th century. The column shrine of the Seven Sorrows, also known as Božie muky, is on a hill opposite house no. 90. The Chapel of St. Florian stands in the village centre, in front of the old fire station. A Calvary group dating from 1921 can be found in the cemetery.

Outside the village centre, the chapel at Stárniská stands on the road between Dojč and Štefanov, near the site of an agricultural cooperative. Its location sets it apart from the religious heritage in the centre. Tomšov mlyn is also part of Štefanov’s history: the settlement is one of the village’s historic settlements, with its original buildings. Some of these buildings are of architectural and historical value.

Floodplain Landscape and Local Tradition

The southern part of Štefanov lies in the flat floodplain of the Myjava River; the Štefanovský potok stream also flows through the village. The cadastral area is used predominantly for agriculture, with a small area covered by acacia woodland. The floodplain, stream and land use each describe a different aspect of the surroundings, whose landscape cannot be reduced to a single feature.

A distinctive local tradition is the “Turci” carnival custom, which is still observed in its original form. For another perspective on the wine region, Štefanov’s membership in the municipalities along the Záhorie Wine Route is relevant. In the wider region around the route, the Open Cellars and Wine Sheds Day has been held annually since 2010. The event relates to the wider area of the wine route, not to Štefanov alone. Check the dates and access arrangements before travelling.

Sport and Practical Information

Alongside its historical and landscape attractions, Štefanov also has sports facilities. In 2017, a football pitch was built beside the primary school grounds and is used by Športový futbalový klub Štefanov for football matches. The pitch has a covered spectator stand. The sports complex also includes changing-room and grandstand buildings, a multi-purpose court and a children’s playground.

Several roads provide orientation for drivers. Road II/500 connects Štefanov with Senica, as well as with Šaštín-Stráže and Dojč, and continues via Kúty and Sobotište to the border with Czechia. Road III/1136 connects the village with Unín and Radimov; it runs for 2 km through the entire built-up area. Road III/1033 connects Štefanov with Letničie and also joins road II/500 Kúty–Senica. The municipal library is open on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 16:00 during the school year. Opening hours may change; check them before your visit.
