Špačince lies in the northern part of the Trnava Hills, in a flat, wide valley of the Krupanský potok. Churches, Calvary, cemetery monuments and archaeological finds reveal different aspects of the village’s history. There is also an educational trail covering several topics and recurring local traditions. When planning your stay, you can focus on buildings, traces of the past or events, depending on your interests.

Church, Calvary and monuments

The Roman Catholic church in Špačince is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1312 and was originally Gothic; its feast day is September 8. The Calvary complex also has a long history: it dates from 1797 and features a Baroque cross. Fourteen stations were erected there in 1873. These dates point to different periods in the creation of sacred sites in the village.

Two historic statues stand in the cemetery: a depiction of the Holy Trinity from 1717 and a statue of Saint Vendelin from 1807. The statue of Christ the King stands on the road to Trnava. It dates from 1678, was erected by Pavol Orban and brought from Lišov in the Krupina District. The monument has been preserved to this day and is protected by the Monuments Board.

Another architectural example is the manor house at 270 Kaštieľska Street. The single-storey building is Neoclassical and dates from the first half of the 19th century. The old Jewish cemetery also contains the chapel with the crypt of the Schwertner family and its complete enclosure. Together, the church, Calvary, cemetery monuments and manor house offer several points of entry for exploring Špačince’s cultural history.

Archaeological traces and local history

The village’s history can also be explored through finds and rights. Archaeological finds dating to around 7000 BC, from the Neolithic period, have been discovered in the area of Špačince. A silver coin from the Roman Empire has also been found. In 1699, Špačince received town privileges and the right to hold markets. These dates highlight different periods and themes: early archaeological finds, evidence from the Roman era and the village’s later legal status. Those interested in history can look beyond the buildings to finds and the development of local rights.

Landscape, educational trail and birdlife

The protected Special Protection Area CHVÚ Špačinsko-nižnianské polia extends across the cadastral area of Špačince. Among other things, it protects the habitats of the saker falcon. This adds a focus on nature and habitat conservation to the architectural and archaeological history.

The Chotárom Špačiniec educational trail provides information on five panels about the history and present of Špačince, archaeology and monuments, flora and fauna, and local features. Its themes range from local history to nature and distinctive local characteristics, without focusing on just one monument. If you would like to read the panels on site, check the condition of the signs during your visit.

Running tradition, Hody and playground

The Špačinský trojuholník run has taken place every summer without interruption since 1978. If you would like to include the run in your travel plans, you can check the specific dates for the year in question. Another local tradition is the Špačince Hody, held on the Sunday after the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on September 8. Traditional dishes include roast goose.

The Špačince playground has a sandbox, numerous safe play features, climbing equipment and slides. It is located close to the cultural centre, with the Krupský potok flowing along one side. As the facilities may change, check the details before your visit if needed.
