Medveďov offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning a trip: protected wetlands and biodiversity, a cycling route through the village, historic sites and a cultural event. Medveďov is also a border crossing into Hungary. When planning your trip, consider whether nature, cycling, cultural heritage or an event date will be the deciding factor.

Wetlands and biodiversity

Opatovské jazierko is a nature reserve in the cadastral area of Medveďov. Its landscape includes a floodplain forest of willows and poplars; the area is also home to protected plant and animal species. It is therefore a distinctive natural feature of the municipality, defined both by its floodplain forest and by the protection of its species.

Kľúčovské rameno is a different kind of habitat. This naturally flooded oxbow depression lies within the cadastral areas of the municipalities of Medveďov, Sap and Kľúčovec. It is part of Section IV of the Dunajské luhy Protected Landscape Area and is also part of the Dunajské luhy Ramsar Site. Well-developed stands of common reed (Phragmites australis) and the adjoining bankside vegetation, consisting mainly of white willows (Salix alba), define the area’s ecological character.

Kľúčovské rameno is home to 240 plant species, including the protected species Najas minor and Trapa natans. The cadastral area of Medveďov is also part of the internationally important Dunajské luhy wetland. The two named nature areas can thus be distinguished by their stated features: Opatovské jazierko is characterised by its floodplain forest and protected plant and animal species, while Kľúčovské rameno is characterised by its oxbow depression, reed beds and plant diversity.

Cycling route and the Danube

A 73.5-kilometre cycling route across Žitný ostrov passes through Medveďov and connects Dunajská Streda with Komárno. The section through Medveďov is almost flat and follows state roads and the Danube embankment. The 73.5 kilometres refers to the entire cycling route; the description of the almost flat terrain applies to the section through Medveďov. This distinction helps separate the character of the local section from the total length of the route.

Fishing is also associated with a specific stretch of the Danube: a carp fishing area called “Dunaj č. 2” has been designated in the section bordering Medveďov. Fishing may require a valid permit and compliance with the local rules in force.

Cultural monument and Village Day

The Church of Saint Anne is a cultural monument in Medveďov. It was built around 1800 and restored after a fire in 1855. Its construction and restoration mark two distinct stages in its history. Another historic site is the monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. The municipal development programme for 2023–2028 lists it among Medveďov’s most valuable tourist sites.

The same municipal development programme lists the Village Day, “Deň obce,” as a recurring cultural event scheduled for 25 to 30 July. If this event is important to your trip, check the dates again before travelling.

Planning your stay in Medveďov

When choosing a hotel for a trip to Medveďov, you can start with the purpose of your visit: the nature reserves, cycling route and historic sites suit different interests and planning needs. If cycling is your main focus, the route’s length, connecting points and description of the section through Medveďov provide useful guidance. For nature enthusiasts, the information about habitats and biodiversity is key; if you plan to attend Village Day, check the confirmed event date.
