Štvrtok Na Ostrove brings together sacred architectural history, historic memorials and recurring cultural programmes. The road behind the cooperative in the direction of Hubice is closed to motorized traffic; entry is prohibited. The Roman Catholic Church of St James the Greater is listed in the Central Register of Monuments of the Slovak Republic as a national cultural monument. There are also crosses, a Holy Trinity column and 20th-century memorials. The activities of the local Csemadok organization are also part of the town’s cultural life. For travelers interested in history and culture, Štvrtok Na Ostrove offers several distinct themes to take into account when planning a stay.

Church and Holy Trinity Column

The foundations of the Church of St James the Greater date from the mid-13th century. Its main nave is late Romanesque; the columns inside were added later. Thus, the information on the dating of the foundations, the architectural classification of the main nave and later changes to the interior reflects different periods. The church cannot therefore be reduced to a single year of construction, but instead has several distinct historical layers.

The Holy Trinity column stands in a park near a church. The residents of the municipality had it erected in 1900; it was restored in 2000 using funds from the local government. At the top is a group of figures depicting the Holy Trinity. Statues of Saints Peter and Paul stand on the pedestal, while a niche contains a group of figures depicting the Madonna and Saint Anne. The column thus brings together several representations in a single monument and is also dated by its year of construction and restoration.

Crosses, Buildings and Memorials

In front of the cultural center, a polychrome stone sculpture of Saint Florian dating from 1893 stands atop a tall column. In front of house No. 133 is a sandstone wayside cross, commissioned by Mihály Sill in 1799. The Fehér kereszt (White Cross) stands in a field in the direction of Bratislava. Jakub Sill had this wayside cross erected in 1913 together with his wife, Žofia Füle; a statue of Saint Anne stands on the pedestal. The three works differ in material, subject matter and date.

In the courtyard of house No. 48 stands a former wayside cross dating from 1913, moved from its original location on the road. A stone Pietà group is set into its pedestal. The Fájdalmas Kereszt (Cross of Sorrows) is also among the historic monuments of Štvrtok Na Ostrove. The town’s history also includes memorial sites commemorating both world wars: the monument to those killed in the First World War, 1914–1918, stands in the park behind the cultural center and was restored in 2000. A new monument to those killed in the Second World War stands in the local cemetery.

House No. 64, known as the “Ľudový dom” (Folk House), is a residential building dating from 1927 whose architectural style has been preserved. A municipal publication for 2025 describes a death bell in the church museum as 541 years old. These examples complement the religious and commemorative themes with a historic residential building and an object from the church museum.

Cultural Programme and Event Dates

Since 2005, the local Csemadok organization has held the monthly “Dom hier” (House of Games) for children aged six to 15. Participants learn about forgotten folk crafts and old folk customs. If you would like to include the programme in your travel plans, confirm the participation requirements in advance.

Every year in November, the local Csemadok organization also holds a month of the mother tongue for young people. It includes literature, essay and grammar competitions. The two offerings therefore differ in frequency and target audience: “Dom hier” is held monthly for children, while the month of the mother tongue takes place annually in November for young people. Check the specific event dates and participation requirements before making plans.
