Hermanovce brings together architectural and commemorative history with hiking through the countryside. The village is home to a Baroque church, a gloriette that serves as a family mausoleum, and a memorial room; north of the village, a Stations of the Cross stands at the foot of Kucmanka Hill. This gives you two distinct focuses for planning your trip: local history and hiking on a named route.

Church and Gloriette

According to the municipality, the Church of St Elizabeth of Hungary is the defining landmark of Hermanovce. It is a Baroque church built in 1650 on the site of an older Gothic church, first mentioned in 1438. Thus, 1438 marks the early mention of the predecessor building, while 1650 marks the construction of the Baroque church. The church was restored between 1860 and 1864. In front of its entrance stands the gloriette, an artistic tomb monument dating from 1811. It combines the function of a garden pavilion with that of a symbolic and actual family mausoleum. It is listed as a national cultural monument under number 292/2 in the Central Register of the Monument Fund and is considered a major attraction in Hermanovce.

Memorial Room and Local History

The memorial room dedicated to Štefan Hlaváč and František Majoch commemorates two priests from Hermanovce. The section dedicated to Štefan Hlaváč displays vestments, a grave cross, books and photographs from his life. The section dedicated to František Majoch documents, through photographs, the places where the priest died and was buried. A deed of inheritance division from 1320 refers to Hermanovce as “Villa Hermanni superior et inferior,” meaning Upper and Lower Hermanovce. North of the village, a Stations of the Cross stands at the foot of Kucmanka Hill.

Kaštieľ Péchy and Pánsky dvor

Kaštieľ Péchy is a historic aristocratic residence in Hermanovce; its history dates back to the 18th century. It is considered a unique example of an aristocratic residence with a rich cultural heritage and stands amid a three-hectare English-style park. The kaštieľ is privately owned and accessible by prior arrangement. In the village centre, publicly accessible remains of the farmyard belonging to the Péchy estate, known as Pánsky dvor, have been preserved.

Hiking in the Šarišská vrchovina Highlands

Hermanovce lies on the slopes of the Šarišská vrchovina Highlands, whose natural beauty draws visitors from the surrounding area. The red-marked hiking trail starts at the cemetery by the bus stop and leads via Chrasť (773.5 m above sea level) and Lazy (853.9 m above sea level) to Mount Mindžová (920 m above sea level), then continues to the municipality of Tichý potok. The Hermanovce–Chotárna hiking trail opened in 2013. One hiker describes views of Čergov and the valley near Renčišov along a route towards Chotárna. The Chotárna cabin is also visited by passers-by and by hikers who come to the region for a weekend and stay there overnight. If you plan to visit the cabin, check its facilities before setting out.
