Fričovce – Castle, Churches and Park
Accommodation in Fričovce
If you are looking for a hotel in Fričovce, its historic architecture and landscape can provide the setting for your stay. The Renaissance castle is a distinctive landmark. It was built between 1623 and 1630 by the master builder Michal Sorger from Prešov for the nobleman Valent Berthóty. The castle is open to the public; guided tours explain its history, architecture and sgraffito decoration.
Renaissance Castle and Park
The castle’s preserved sgraffito decoration is among the rarest of its kind in Slovakia. Blind arcades are also part of its distinctive architectural design. Blind arcades are decorative arches on a wall that do not form passageways. In Fričovce, they were originally adorned with 150 mythological and historical figures. The motifs come from antiquity, the Middle Ages and the modern era. At the castle, architecture, sgraffito and figurative decoration come together—topics that are also covered on a guided tour.
The castle is set in a park of about five hectares, with ponds, water features, old trees and numerous natural-looking corners. The grounds are suitable for walks and relaxation. This offers a different focus alongside the view of the building: instead of façades and design, the park foregrounds water, trees and green retreats.
Churches, Altar and Funeral Chapel
The Church of Saint Bartholomew was built in 1737–1738 on the site of a Gothic church, whose predecessor dated from the 14th or 15th century. Its altar was created in 1752 by the master J. Kebling from Levoča. Beneath the church is a crypt believed to be the burial place of nobles from the Fričovce branch of the Berthóty family. The entrance to the crypt is sealed.
A funeral chapel built in 1811 stands in front of the church. Its form recalls a small mausoleum, and it is designed in the Empire style. The chapel and the church are distinct buildings, each with its own form and date of construction: the early 19th-century funeral chapel on one hand, and the church—with its older Gothic predecessor and 18th-century altar—on the other.
Another religious building in Fričovce is the Roman Catholic Church of the Three Martyrs of Košice, built in 1993. Together with the older churches, it offers a view of several eras. The building history spans from the Gothic predecessor of the Church of Saint Bartholomew to this late-20th-century church.
Landscape, Views and Trails
The higher parts of Fričovce offer beautiful panoramic views. The Kanné Valley is another point of interest for walks and hikes: Fričovce is a starting point for accessing the valley. A marked hiking trail runs through the valley from Šindliar to the Branisko ridge. Before setting out, check the exact route of the marked hiking trail in the Kanné Valley locally.
Hradisko, an archaeological site with finds from an early medieval Slavic hillfort, lies north of Fričovce. These finds broaden the historical perspective beyond the surviving church buildings. Fričovce is also located along the route of the D1 motorway. The municipal assessment cites this as a factor contributing to good accessibility, while also noting traffic noise. If you are weighing up the location for a hotel stay, both aspects are worth considering.
